This week for Georgetown Time Machine, GM visits a playful photo in the archives of the DC Historical Society.
The information for the photo indicates that it is of an unknown location in Georgetown, but it is dated to 1964. GM scoured Google Maps trying to pin down the exact address, but couldn’t find a match. Anyone recognize the home?
We’ll just have to speculate as to the colors. At first it looks like a group of paint swatches from a homeowner trying to decide on a final paint color. But the design seems too finished for that. Plus, there’s the white flower in the center. Maybe some hippies?
3115 O Street, now painted a more somber grey. At the time of the patchwork colors, this was the home of Rowland Evans, a syndicated columnist famously partnered with “The Prince of Darkness” Robert Novak.

Ha, that’s awesome. Thanks for the info!
Topher,
This is 3115 O St NW, across the street from Christ Church. The house was owned by George and Patty Herman. He was a correspondent for CBS news. In the course of planning to have their house painted they had various samples applied to choose. They couldn’t make up their minds so decided to leave it with a facade of many colors. I can’t comment on the white daisy, but the lower right hand corner carried the signature “Emilio”, for Pucci! The facade stayed this way through the 70’s and early 80’s. They weren’t hippies by any stretch of the word.
Thanks for running the picture. It’s charming.
Regards, Tom

I just saw the comment about Rowland Evans. Wrong. He lived down the block about three houses away where his widow, Kay, still lives.

Whoops, Tom, you are right — the houses resemble each other enough that I mixed them up. I also knew the Hermans, and that anecdote is correct. Thanks for fixing the record.
