About Topher

From 1820 to 1837, a newspaper called the Georgetown Metropolitan was published in the city of Georgetown, DC. The copy above is from July 12, 1826, reporting on the deaths of Presidents Jefferson and Adams on July 4th, exactly fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For a short while, it was published by John L. O’Sullivan and his brother-in-law Samuel Langtree. O’Sullivan faded into obscurity until the middle of the 20th century when the term “Manifest Destiny” was attributed to him. So what does this have to do with 2008? Well, not much. But, basically I’ve realized that the neighborhood of Georgetown lacks a neighborhood blog. I’ve decided to give it a try. I looked through Georgetown’s history for a worthy name to resurrect and the Georgetown Metropolitan sounded perfect to me. And so I have reestablished the Georgetown Metropolitan, 171 years since it last was printed. With luck, the Georgetown Metropolitan will serve as a valuable information source for Georgetown residents.

Come Hear Plans for Ghost Kitchen Delivery Hub

Tonight at 6pm Georgetown Main Street and ANC Commissioner Jenny Mitchell will be hosting an online discussion about the proposals for 1721 Wisconsin Ave.

GM wrote about this proposal in April. In short, a “ghost kitchen” would move in to the space that was previously Ledo’s (and is now Noosh). This would be essentially a commercial kitchen that produces food for multiple restaurants, some which may actually exist somewhere else and some which won’t really exist anywhere. The vast majority of the food produced by the ghost kitchen would be delivered to the customers via third party delivery companies (e.g. Uber Eats). Turning this block into a depot for Toyota Corrolas pulling illegal u-turns is somewhat concerning to GM, perhaps it is to you too.

Click here to register for the call. This is meant to be mostly informative, so even if you’re as concerned as GM, it would not be helpful to get up on a soapbox just yet. There’s a whole zoning application process for that…

Robins!

It’s that time of year again.

Several weeks ago, GM noticed some robins building a nest in his patio umbrella. Soon after four little blue eggs appeared:

And then about a week ago, three of the eggs hatched. All day long the mom and dad robins fly back and forth delivering worms and bugs to those three hungry mouths. (It seems the fourth egg didn’t hatch. The reason you don’t see it in the photo with the chicks is likely that often the parents will eat unhatched eggs.)

GM’s happy they set up underneath the umbrella. Two years ago another robins nest appeared in GM’s hydrangea tree. Sadly after the chicks hatched, the crows found them. Hopefully these new chicks won’t be found hidden away like this!

New Mural on Back of Martin’s

A new mural adorns the rear of the historic Martin’s Tavern. It is the work of Matt Corrado, and it features an artistic depiction of the historic Georgetown theater (the other buildings don’t quite match the true streetscape, but close enough).

The label at the bottom left of the mural indicates that it was made to celebrate small businesses in Georgetown. The label also sheds some light on why exactly the mural depicts a giant elk looming over Wisconsin Ave. It’s sponsored by The Hartford insurance company.
