Antiques Roadshow – Georgetown Edition

This Saturday, appraisers from the downtown auction house Weschler’s will be on hand at Dumbarton House to give you verbal auction-value estimates on furniture, decorative arts, silver, Asian works, paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, rugs, jewelry, watches, U.S. coins and currency.

No, PBS won’t be there and you won’t end up on TV finding out that your throw rug is worth $500,000. But you might be surprised by the value you get nonetheless.

Each appraisal will cost you $10 and you’re limited to two, so choose wisely. The proceeds will benefit Dumbarton House and the wonderful events they host there. Reservations are required.

Halloween Street Closures

Georgetown Halloween by ChristyFrink.

Georgetown has long been a destination for hoards of Halloween revelers. This used to lead to general chaos on M St. Over the years, though, the city has come up with a pretty decent plan for handling the huge crowds.

Georgetown used to shut down M St. to traffic. It made it a lot more fun to be down on M St. and allowed for better people watching. The problem with that system was that it pushed a lot more traffic into the side streets. Since Georgetown is popular for kids from all over the city to hit up for candy, there was a particular concern about the increased (and possibly drunk) traffic.

The solution was to keep traffic open on M St. and to restrict it on the side streets. While this makes M St. a lot more annoying to visit, it’s probably safer overall.

The list of road closures is long. Basically just about every road not called Wisconsin or M is closed to through traffic from 6:30 Saturday through the night. In the East Village, the only open roads will be 31st and Q. In the West Village its P and 35th that will remain somewhat open. Plus there’s no parking on most of M, Wisconsin, and K/Water St. Continue reading

Boo-In-The-Park Today at Rose Park

Don’t forget that today is the last Rose Park Farmers Market for the season. Better yet, they’ll be celebrating the annual childrens’ Boo-in-the-Park. Costumes are optional, however there’ll be a parade and awards for the best costume. Unfortunately there won’t be any actual pumpkins due to this year’s shortage, but there’ll be cookies and snacks.

So if your kiddies are too excited to wait till Saturday to try out their costume, bring them by Rose Park from 4 to 6.

Street Closures This Weekend

This Sunday the Marine Corps Marathon will be snaking its way through Georgetown. To accommodate the race, some roads will be closed to traffic. Here’s a map of the affected streets in Georgetown:

Street Closures for Marine Corp Marathon

The runners will:

  • Come across the Key Bridge
  • Turn left down Canal Rd.
  • Stay on Canal Rd. all the way to Reservoir Rd. (where Fletcher’s is)
  • Go up Reservoir Rd. back to MacArthur.
  • Take MacArthur back to Canal to M St.
  • Stay on M until Wisconsin, where they turn right down towards K.
  • Take a left on K, take it over to Rock Creek Parkway
  • Continue on to another hellish 15 miles or so as GM sleeps in.

The streets will open up as the racers finish with each section. The Georgetown section is on miles 4 through 10, so the roads should be clear by late morning.

The Georgetown Metropolitan Hits The Beach

The Georgetown Metropolitan Hits the Beach

GM’s at the beach this week, so the posts will be a bit lighter this week. Depending on AT&T coverage at the beach, you may get the Morning Metropolitans this week, and the Georgetown Metropoli are all set to go, but you’ll have to wait till next week for regular middle of the day posts. See you next week!

Tudor Place to Add Yoga

Yoga at Tudor Place

Do you like yoga? Do you like late 18th century manors? If you said yes to both those questions then Tudor Place has something perfect for you: Every Friday morning starting in August there will be a yoga session held in the gardens. It’s a beautiful setting, and GM has often wondered what it would be like to take in the scenery with his leg wrapped around neck. If you rsvp on time, and you’re flexible, you can live his dream.

(psst: Dumbarton Oaks, this is yet another example of how Tudor Place makes itself a good neighbor while you keep your gates locked up.)

This Q & A Cafe Goes to Eleven

From the department of giant wtf comes this: the next guests at Carol Joynt’s Q & A Cafe at Nathans are none other than the band members of Spinal Tap. This is truly a bizarre and, frankly, inspired choice by Joynt. What media figures know more about getting a raw deal than Spinal Tap? Joynt and the band will have much to commiserate over.

The Tap shall arrive May 13th at Noon. Tickets are $35 a head (which includes the brunch). Call Jon Moss at 338-2000 to reserve your space.

In the meantime:

Garden Tour Next Weekend

Close on the heels of the posh Georgetown House Tour is its slightly younger and less stuffy sibling, the Georgetown Garden Tour. May 9th, from 10 AM to 5 PM, the back yards of eight Georgetown homes will open up.

Tickets are $30 if you buy them by Saturday; it’s $35 after that. The Georgetown Current reports that three of the homes will be the three thirds of what once made up Evelyn Walsh McLean’s house on R St., just west of Wisconsin.

This is one of GM’s favorite events of the year here in Georgetown. The gardens can be anything from small and charming to the huge and austere like Evermay, which was featured last year. You only get one chance a year to (legally) poke around these impressive secret gardens so don’t miss out.

If you don’t buy your tickets ahead of time, get them at Christs Church at 31st and O. Oh and one tip, last year GM spent 5 minutes waiting in a line that snaked through Christs Church before he realized he was in the snack line. The ticket line was much shorter. So make sure you’re waiting in the right line.

Avenue des Champs-Wisconsin

Georgetown is blessed with more than its fair share of French establishments: Bistro Lepic, Patisserie Poupon, Bistro Francais, Cafe Bonaparte, Cafe La Ruche, Citronelle, La Chaumerie. La liste goes on…

Well this weekend, Georgetown is about to get Frencher because it’s time for the annual French Market. From 11:00 AM to 6 PM this Friday and Saturday, 30 vendors from upper Wisconsin Ave. will be out selling their wares on the sidewalk.

GM’s always wondered what’s French about a large sidewalk sale. But oh well, it’s a fun time and a good way to give a little boost to a lot of fantastic independent stores.
