French Market This Weekend

Starting right now(!) is the annual Book Hill French Market. It runs till 5pm tonight and then runs again from 10 AM to 5 PM tomorrow.

It’s Book Hill’s signature annual event and it’s a great chance to become acquainted with what offerings the little district offers. Many people comment that in many ways it’s sort of the last outpost of “old Georgetown” with its small independent shops. So come out and not only do you get transported to France, you go back in time too!

French Market by M.V. Jantzen.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Apparently its the policy of DDOT now to allow you to reserve hundreds of feet of on-street parking for private events. At least that sure seemed to be the case at the old Graham house, where Mark Ein lent his unused mansion out for a WHCD brunch on Saturday. Signs reserved street parking on 30th from Dent all the way up to R, and on R all the way to 29th. Then a coach bus simply parked on the north side of R, basically blocking one lane of traffic. This was a huge cluster$#%^ and GM is going to get to the bottom of it. (GM noticed similar signs on Q St. in front of the Bowie-Sevier mansion). It’s perfectly reasonable for street parking to be reserved for moving trucks or city work, etc., but it absolutely shouldn’t be set aside for a party simply because the requester is rich. For what it’s worth, Katharine Graham never pulled that crap. She used her lawn or the cemetery.
  • But hey, GM hopes that didn’t ruin your weekend. How incredibly lively the neighborhood was on Saturday? GM only wished more people left their cars at home.

ANC Preview: Odds and Ends Edition

As we suffer through the last days of this lousy Smarch weather, we can look hopefully on the fact that next week is April. We can get through this! And with the first week of April comes the April ANC meeting. And the agenda for that meeting has been released, and it’s a mix of odds and ends.

French Market

The French Market returns again this year on the weekend of April 29th. It’s a great affair highlighting the stores on the north end of Wisconsin Ave. GM thinks it would be even better if they closed down traffic on Wisconsin Ave. for the event and created a true plaza, but that’s not in the cards. Even taking out a lane of parking to increase space would be great, but the city refuses to shut down only a part of the road for events like this.

Anyway, it’ll still be a great event and wonderful way to support the Book Hill shops.

Georgetown Village

The Georgetown Village is an effort by citizens in Georgetown to replicate a program that has been successful in other neighborhoods, like Capitol Hill. What this program is designed to do is to encourage seniors to age-in-place and continue living in the communities that they’ve grown to love by creating a network to “support the medical, functional, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of older adults.” In real world terms, that could mean rides to the Safeway or a doctor, daily check-ins, and social events, among other things. Small things that can cumulatively really make the difference between staying in your home or not.

Right now, the Georgetown Village effort is recruiting its inaugural members and will hold a kick-off meeting on April 26th at 6:30 at the Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Continue reading

Frenchy by M.V. Jantzen.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Great shots of the French Market this weekend.
  • The ANC voted against giving Dixie Liquors an exemption from the Single Sales Ban. ABRA is supposed to give that vote “great weight” but they already gave the waiver. We’ll see whether they’ll revoke it.

Avenue des Champs-Wisconsin

Georgetown is blessed with more than its fair share of French establishments: Bistro Lepic, Patisserie Poupon, Bistro Francais, Cafe Bonaparte, Cafe La Ruche, Citronelle, La Chaumerie. La liste goes on…

Well this weekend, Georgetown is about to get Frencher because it’s time for the annual French Market. From 11:00 AM to 6 PM this Friday and Saturday, 30 vendors from upper Wisconsin Ave. will be out selling their wares on the sidewalk.

GM’s always wondered what’s French about a large sidewalk sale. But oh well, it’s a fun time and a good way to give a little boost to a lot of fantastic independent stores.
