After going dark for many weeks, the neighborhood market known as Le Petite Corner Store has closed.

Known more for its Turkish offerings, the store was less of a full service neighborhood market like Scheele’s or Sara’s. But it was popular nonetheless.

GM has been unable to learn of the future of the property. Like Scheele’s and Sara’s, it operated under a zoning grandfathering. The property, like all those around it, it zoned for residential. But since it was operating as a market before the zoning rules kicked in, it was allowed to continue. Continue reading →

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• Good news: Suspect arrested in the attempted kidnapping case.
• Cat Cafe is doing a pop-up on M St. with just kittens.

Lovers Lane

On Tuesday early evening, a frightening attempt kidnapping occurred on Dumbarton St. just west of Rose Park. As described by the MPD release:

At approximately 4:55 pm, the suspect grabbed a juvenile victim and attempted to lure them away from the listed location. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

The suspect in this case is described as a white female who is approximately 30-40 years old, 5’7”- 5’8” in height and has blonde hair which is in a Mohawk hairstyle. She was last seen running Eastbound on Dumbarton Street, Northwest, wearing a white coat.

A surveillance camera caught the above photo of the suspect. If you see her, call 911 immediately. She apparently has a distinctive hair cut, with the sides shaved close and blonde hair on top. Continue reading →

Dumbarton Oaks Park

This week on Georgetown Time Machine, GM heads to the 80s. It was a time of big shoulders, Jams shorts, and Chevy Chase movies that were still funny. And one of those was Spies Like Us. A reader pointed out to Georgetown that the opening sequence ends with a scene in Georgetown. He just wasn’t sure where exactly.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• More on the West Heating Plant demolition approval.
• Wow, $1.2 mil for a Montrose Walk condo. When GM lived there, even this unique duplex wasn’t asking anything near that.

Montrose Park

Last week, the Mayor’s Agent approved the proposed demolition of the West Heating Plant. The application, submitted by Richard Levy and his co-investors, is in connection with the proposal to build a ten story condominium building on the site. While this is not the final approval needed (not by a long shot) it is an eventful moment for the process.

The Mayor’s Agent is an appointed individual who makes the final determination for historic preservation issues in DC. Even in Georgetown, where a federal body, the Commission of Fine Arts, makes most of the preservation decisions, the Mayor’s Agent can step in and have the final say. Continue reading →
