If you’re like GM, you like to browse neighborhood real estate listings. And if you’re even more like him, you’ve come across the following and wondered, what the heck is this about?:

GM has always wondered what exactly “Urban Land-Sassafras-Chillum” means. So finally he did some digging (internet digging, not dirt digging). And it turns out these are classifications of soil.

GM was of the opinion that soil types boiled down to basic characteristics, like say “sandy” or “rocky” or maybe even “loamy”, whatever that meant. But apparently soils are classified by a system of incredible detail and particularity. According to this 1976 survey of the soils of DC, our little patch of land is composed of dozens of different soil types, with names such as “Brandywine gravelly loam” or “Beltsville-urban land complex”. It’s been delayed due to the extended heat, but fall foliage has finally arrived to Georgetown. And there are plenty places to take it in.

In 2013, Casey Trees pulled together a fantastic little tool, it’s a map of downtown DC with several different trails laid out that you can take and admire quality street tree foliage. In Georgetown it recommends a meandering trail through the heart of the village to enjoy its sugar maples:

As part of his annual census of Georgetown establishments, GM likes to see how the restaurants and cafes breakout in terms of style. Hence: what does Georgetown taste like?

Like most years, there wasn’t that much difference versus last year. Sweets still take the cake, with the opening of Sugar Lab, Acai Berry, and the Dough Jar making up for Dolcezza’s closure. American keeps the second slot, growing from seventeen to nineteen different restaurants. Italian and Asian are close behind.

The slice that grew the biggest is coffee shops, which increased 50% from eight to twelve. Georgetown’s got a bottomless love for coffee shops.
