The ANC meets for its March session next Monday at 6:30 at Visitation. The agenda is below, but here are some highlights:

Co-working is all the buzz recently. And now Georgetown will get a new spin on that concept with The Wing, a “network of co-working and community spaces for women.” WAMU has a bit more details: “In D.C., a trendy women’s coworking space called The Wing is expected to open in Georgetown, offering lactation rooms, blow-outs and spritzes of Chanel No. 5 for an annual fee up to $2,700.”

The item is on the agenda because they are apparently also seeking a liquor license as a restaurant, which is a bit odd! Restaurants have to get 45% of the revenues from food sales. How can a co-working space get that much money from food? Will they even have a kitchen? We’ll see.

Whatever form it finally takes, this space will have a prime location directly next to Baked and Wired. Continue reading →

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• (It’s a small thing, but in the news reports over the embattled, and now former, DC School Chancellor, Duke Ellington School is always described as in Georgetown. It is not. It’s in Burleith. But reporters like to describe it as being in Georgetown because it spices up the story. It is a lazy technique and they should stop.)
• Fiola Mare is a good place for mocktails, apparently.

This week for Seven Georgetowns, GM will tackle the second of the two districts that he has actually lived in: Georgetown Heights.

For those just tuning in, GM recently posited that Georgetown as a total neighborhood can be broken up into seven distinct “sub-neighborhoods”.  And further, he argues that each of these districts has a distinct identity and can stand on its own as offering a great deal, even when ignoring the rest of Georgetown around it.

Georgetown Heights is the name GM is ascribing to the northeast part of Georgetown. Although it should be said that Georgetown Heights was a name that was occasionally used in the past to describe this part of Georgetown.

For GM’s purposes he is limiting it mostly to the area north of Q St., between 28th St. and 32nd. He also includes the three blocks south of Q St. between 29th and 32nd (although that is slightly debatable). Additionally, he includes the area north of R St. from 32nd to just east of the library. • 50 of 70 wedding per year at Georgetown University occur in Dalhgren Chapel. But where do the other 20 take place?
• DC Deputy Mayor of Education resigns in scandal. (GM called for her firing last year over a different matter, but will take what he can get).

This week on Georgetown Time Machine, GM visits the intersection of M and Wisconsin at a rare time when there was not a single soul around.

It’s not clear exactly when this photo was taken, but it’s similar to other photos of a dark empty M St. that are dated to 1959. And that sounds correct.
