According to several job listings for positions at the planned new Amazon bookstore on M St., the store appears set to open in early 2018.

The store was announced last spring, but no opening date was also announced. There is signage up at 3040 M St., where the store will be, but that doesn’t carry a date either. Continue reading →

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• HPRB named the West Heating Plant an historic landmark.
• The “Tony” from Tony & Joes.

1300 block of 30th St.

Today for Georgetown Time Machine, GM is visiting the center of Georgetown: Wisconsin and M St.

The shot is an aerial shot of the intersection and the nearby blocks. It is probably from the late 1950s or early 1960s. It can’t be later than 1963, as GM will explain below.

Here are some interesting details:

You can see the 3100 block of M St. fairly well. You can make out the large Woolworth’s on the right (which now is Urban Outfitters). On the left side you can see Kosto, which was a craft store, and Scott’s Shoes. The stretch looked quite different from how it appeared a few decades earlier:

Dumbarton Oaks Park

This week for Know Your Trees, GM is talking about the honey locust.

Unlike last week’s poplars, honey locusts definitely appear along sidewalks in Georgetown. They are really fast growers and can turn a sun-baked sidewalk into a sun-dabbled sidewalk fairly quickly. Continue reading →

One of the season’s highlights for Georgetown will return again this year on December 3rd. Saint Nick will be there to greet the kids, and there will be food, coffee, crafts, music and more. Come on out! Here are more of the details:

Breakfast with Santa at Volta Park – Please join the Friends of Volta Park as we gather to celebrate the season.   Children young and old are invited to take pictures with Santa.  Santa will be bringing lots of friends and activities including Christmas carolers, holiday crafts, and Coach John’s soccer school.  There will be complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, doughnuts and other baked goods.  Santa requests you please arrive early to see magical sleigh ride.   Sunday December 3^th 10am-noon.
