The Morning Metropolitan

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Some sort of a weird barricade situation down by the waterfront. (It’s just so odd to see a newspaper report that a man has been “locked in his office” for a couple hours. Without more information it sounds like an Onion article about a man napping.)
  • Georgetown: Not prude!

Happy New Year Georgetown, and welcome back to the Georgetown Metropolitan rested and refreshed for another year. GM missed a bunch on his break, but here’s the latest:

  • The “Peeping Rabbi” was even worse than you may have realized.
  • Some closings (or very soon to close) since GM last posted: Village Art and Craft (which has moved up to Q and Wis.), Jack Wills, and Nadeau (which is claiming to be moving, but it’s “moving” to a location that has beenĀ open since before the Georgetown store opened.)

OriginalPhoto-471730361.915108

After months of construction at the old Mr. Smith’s building at 3104 M St., the scaffolding was removed recently and it revealed historical details that the old awning hid.

Stores like to have awnings. Mostly because they can act as giant billboards. But as this work demonstrates, they can also cover up some nice architecture, in this case a stately row of transom windows. Compare the photo above with what it looked like before:

The awning covered up everything between the first and second floor windows. The new cream-colored trim also makes the details “pop”, but the awning is the largest change.

This sort of reveal also occurred when Francesca’s took over half of the Bristo Francais: Continue reading
