This week on Georgetown Time Machine, GM heads to the 80s. It was a time of big shoulders, Jams shorts, and Chevy Chase movies that were still funny. And one of those was Spies Like Us. A reader pointed out to Georgetown that the opening sequence ends with a scene in Georgetown. He just wasn’t sure where exactly.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• More on the West Heating Plant demolition approval.
• Wow, $1.2 mil for a Montrose Walk condo. When GM lived there, even this unique duplex wasn’t asking anything near that.

Last week, the Mayor’s Agent approved the proposed demolition of the West Heating Plant. The application, submitted by Richard Levy and his co-investors, is in connection with the proposal to build a ten story condominium building on the site. While this is not the final approval needed (not by a long shot) it is an eventful moment for the process.

The Mayor’s Agent is an appointed individual who makes the final determination for historic preservation issues in DC. Even in Georgetown, where a federal body, the Commission of Fine Arts, makes most of the preservation decisions, the Mayor’s Agent can step in and have the final say. Continue reading →

Now beginneth GM’s annual plea to neighborly decency: Shovel Your Sidewalks!

And if appeals to decency are not enough, consider that as of 2016, DC can fine residents who don’t shovel the sidewalk in front of their house within 24 hours of the end of the storm. The fine is $25 for residents and $150 for businesses. It’s long been the case that the law mandated the shoveling, but the process of actually obtaining a fine against the scofflaw was so cumbersome that it was literally never used. Continue reading →

• New York Falafel restaurant coming to Georgetown.
• Despite the DC government being closed for snow today, it appears that trash is still getting picked up, which means Georgetown’s Tuesday pickup will not be pushed back either.
