Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• The crazy neo-classical bus station that Georgetown University never built.
• Despite the federal government closure, the DDOT meeting on Georgetown’s transportation is still happening tonight at Visitation at 7:00.

This week GM is dusting off the Georgetown Time Machine to bring you to the corner of M and 34th.

The year is likely in or near 1964. The Buick Invicta at the bottom right has a 1964 Virginia license plate. That would be consistent with the other cars on the road.

As for the road itself, it was still unpaved at this point. The streetcars had only stopped running a couple years earlier. Continue reading →

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• When the local professional baseball team recruited directly from Georgetown.
• Red Truck Bakery founder coming to Q & A Cafe this Friday.

This Wednesday night, the District Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting to discuss possible improvements to “Georgetown Circulation”. It will be at Georgetown Visitation at 7 pm.

There are no shortages of ideas for improving transportation in Georgetown. But the more important thing is to decide what the problems are in the first place. If you think the primary problem is how to get cars through Georgetown faster, you’ll reach different conclusions on the solution than if you think the problem is getting people through Georgetown faster. It’s likely that solutions to the first question will simply make more room for more cars, which will happily take up the space. But solutions to the second problem (like bus priority) could improve things for more people. Continue reading →

Potomac River

If you’ve been by the canal recently, you know that it finally wet again. The massive work on Lock 3 has been substantially completed, and the long dry stretch was finally fed by the river again. It’s such a great site to see the cascading falls once more.

But getting one lock fixed wasn’t the only thing needed by this national treasure. Plenty of work remains ahead to shore up the canal and make sure it will last at least another 168 years. Continue reading →
