The Georgetown Metropolitan

In January, GM reported that the Georgetown (and original) location of Dolcezza was closed for renovations. The sign on the door announced they’d be reopened by March. For several reasons, it doesn’t look like they’ll meet that promise.

GM was a bit surprised that they were closed for renovations in the first place. Back in 2013, GM learned that the long term plan for the Georgetown location was to move to a spot closer to M St. The building was temporarily for sale at the time. Ultimately they decided to stay at this address for now, and even did some renovations. The fact that the long term plan was to move on top of the fact they so recently did some renovations was a bit odd, but maybe they changed their long term plans? Continue reading →

GM started the Know Your Trees series to educate you on the varieties of street trees you see around Georgetown. Typically these are medium to large tree chosen for shade or natural habitat for birds. But GM has pretty much exhausted the list of trees that fit that category, so he’s branching (no pun intended) out write about ornamental trees you might find around Georgetown, if not necessarily in a street tree box.

So this week GM is writing about one of the most popular ornamental trees around DC: the dogwood.

Other than a live oak, nothing quite evokes the south quite like a flowering dogwood. Arriving in the warmth of mid-spring, the white (and occasionally pinkish) dabbles of dogwood flowers grace their trees like they were just put there by Bob Ross’s paintbrush. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• The long-awaited Church Hall restaurant (which will be in the former mall building) is promising “big beers” whatever that is.
• Five of the top 25 most expensive real estate listings in DC are in Georgetown, right now.

Tudor Place

Last week, the long time shoe store at the corner of Wisconsin and O, Prince and Princess, posted a liquor license application notice.

While the notice wasn’t long on details, it does include this information about the proposed restaurant:

NATURE OF OPERATION New Restaurant, serving Spanish cuisine/tapas with a vegetarian infusion. Sidewalk Café with 20 seats. Total Occupancy Load is 350 with seating for 200.

HOURS OF OPERATION AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE SALES, SERVICE, AND CONSUMPTION INSIDE PREMISES AND FOR SIDEWALK CAFE Sunday 9 am – 2 am, Monday through Thursday 10 am – 2 am, Friday 10 am – 3 am and Saturday 9 am – 3 am

GM has heard for a long time that the owner of the building, who also owns several of the adjacent buildings, wanted to put in a restaurant on the first floor and convert the upper floors to condos. This is the first public indication that that is true. Continue reading →

The long wait will soon be over: Dumbarton Oaks Gardens will be open again to the public. They have been closed since last July in order for the institution to perform significant upgrades to the systems.

And with this early spring causing forsythia and daffodils to burst out, the gardens are opening just in the nick of time. The gardens are spectacular pretty much any time of the year, but with the cherry grove, the ancient wisteria, and fragrant magnolias, they’re really at their peak in the spring. Continue reading →
