On Tuesday, it was announced that the prestigious Man Booker Award, which is given to the best English language novel published in the United Kingdom, was awarded to the American, George Saunders. It was for his 2017 book Lincoln in Bardo.
The novel is about Abraham Lincoln and how, in his grief over the death of his son Willie, the President visited Willie’s crypt in Georgetown’s Oak Hill Cemetery to hold his corpse.
While this is certainly one of the more notable literary works to take place in whole or in part in Georgetown, it is certainly not the first. Continue reading

This week for Know Your Trees, GM is examining a somewhat rare tree for Georgetown: the linden tree.
Linden trees are medium to large hardwood trees, which do well in open fields with plenty of space to spread out. They can survive in city environments, but they typically won’t grow quite as large. Continue reading

Last week, the Washington Post released its annual Fall Dining Guide, a list of the city’s top restaurants according to the paper’s top restaurant reviewer, Tom Sietsema. And unsurprisingly, Georgetown only did so-so. Which is not that bad really! Washington has become a great dining city, with superlative restaurants in neighborhoods all across DC.
