Water Your Street Trees!
It’s that time of year again when GM harangues you about caring for our precious street trees. So here is goes:
Water your street trees!
We’ve had an unusually wet spring. And you do not need to start watering street trees immediately. But it will become necessary sooner than you think. So if you have a young tree on the sidewalk in front of your house or apartment, please, please keep it in mind this summer and water it. The basic goal you should have is to water young trees at least once a week, so long as you get a good 20-25 gallons of water.
If you have a gator (the green bags, which aren’t preferred anymore since they can hurt the bark if they’re not taken off when not in use) or the ooze tube (the brown bags, which are preferred now since you can leave them on without harming the tree) you should just fill it up and let it run. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of Washington a web version of the Georgetown Current, which is awesome.
- Speaking of which: the neighbors near Duke Ellington want the construction stopped, which would affect the planned temporary move of Hyde-Addison.

Bike to Work Day this Friday!
This Friday is Bike to Work Day here in DC. And as it has the last couple years, Georgetown is participating in the festivities.
Bike to Work Day was started way back in 1956 by the League of American Cyclists. Recently it has grown in popularity, particularly in cities like DC that are putting serious efforts into encouraging those that can to consider riding around town on a bike.
How it works is that you register here and select a pit stop to stop at during your trip on Friday. These locations will have on hand “bike ambassadors” to answer any questions you have about biking and how to incorporate it more into your routine. Also, you’ll be entered to win prizes, such as a free bike. Plus there’s free food and drinks to help power your ride into work.
Like in previous years, Georgetown will have a pit stop at the intersection of K and Wisconsin. It will be open from 7:30 to 9:30 am.
You get some pretty good stuff, like the stuff GM got a few years ago:

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Georgetown is still the most expensive neighborhood on a per-square foot basis.
- Sequoia will partially reopen this month (which seems hard to believe for GM given how much construction is still going on at the restaurant).

Get to Dumbarton Oaks Soon
Dumbarton Oaks Gardens is closing for about 8 months starting July. So you really ought to plan a trip there soon before the gates close till next March.
Dumbarton Oaks in late May is not exactly at its peak in terms of blooms. The wisteria flowers are faded, the cherries and magnolias long gone, but the greenery is pretty great. And the peonies and roses are blooming.
Here’s how it’s looking this week:
