The Georgetown Metropolitan

The fabulous Concerts in the Parks series returns May 21st to Volta Park. As in past years, Rebecca McCabe will perform. June 18th another return artist, the Walkaways, will play, also at Volta Park. The series concludes on July 9th at Rose Park with the Market Band.

It’s always a great time for everyone. So come bring a picnic and a blanket and enjoy the show!

Dumbarton Oaks

The Washington Business Journal reported yesterday that Sagamore Development, the owners of the historic Nathans building on the southeast corner of Wisconsin and M St., is seeking a tenant for the space. This comes as a surprise since the widely held assumption was that the sportswear company, Under Armour, would move in once the renovations are complete.

This assumption arose since Sagamore Development is an investment company owned by Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour. When Sagamore bought the property off the Heon family, there was some thought that since the building wasn’t bought by Under Armour itself, then maybe the company wouldn’t occupy it. But then pretty much everything GM heard about the property indicated that Under Armour would move in. For instance, when the architect, Ankie Barnes, presented the (beautiful) plans to the ANC, GM asked him directly whether he knew who would move in. His answer was that he didn’t know for sure, but was assuming it was Under Armour. Continue reading →

Potomac River

A new report based upon DDOT data indicates that it is still very dangerous for pedestrians in Georgetown.

The study, by 1 Point 21 Interactive, collects all the data on pedestrian collisions in DC between 2009 and 2015 and charts it to a map. You can see the map above, which shows that the highest concentration of pedestrian crashes (i.e. an automobile or bike collision involving a pedestrian) was in downtown, followed closely by U St. and Columbia Heights.

But Georgetown is plenty dangerous. In that period there were 109 pedestrian crashes in Georgetown and Burleith. That’s a collision approximately every six weeks. That’s way too high. Continue reading →

Montrose Park

GM was sent the photo above from a resident. It is an aerial view of the Georgetown waterfront before the construction of the Whitehurst Freeway. It is likely from around 1940.

The photo comes from the B&O Railroad Historical Society, which would be interested in the Georgetown waterfront since the B&O used to travel right down Water St. and K St.

The photo is a stark reminder of how much different the waterfront was just a generation or two ago. (Rosslyn is similarly changed).
