A Marathon of Confusion

Next month, the Georgetown neighborhood library will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the fictional events of James Joyce’s legendary Ulysses with a marathon reading of the epic work, culminating on Bloomsday itself, June 16th.

The book is notoriously difficult and confusing. However, some argue that it becomes more comprehensible when read aloud. You can come and judge for yourself. The reading will begin June 9th. The reading will continue each day, except Thursday, following this schedule:

Monday, June 9, 2014, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Tuesday, June 10, 2014, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Wednesday, June 11, 2014, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Thursday, June 12, 2014, NO READING

Friday, June 13, 2014, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Saturday, June 14, 2014, 10 AM – 5:00 PM

Sunday, June 15, 2014, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Monday, June 16, 2014, 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Spade Empire Expands Footprint

GM wondered yesterday what was going to replace the recently closed Juicy Couture, and readers quickly responded. Kate Spade will be taking over the corner of M and Thomas Jefferson.

But aren’t they already occupying a space practically across the street, you might ask? Yes. They plan to move the Kate Spade store. But they’ll keep the old space for a newish concept: Kate Spade Saturday. Continue reading

Hyde Principal Stepping Down

Yesterday Hyde-Addison principal, Dana Nerenberg, announced that she will be stepping down as principal after the end of this school year. She is moving to Portland to join her fiancee. Here’s the announcement:

Dear Hyde-Addison Families and Community:

Hyde-Addison is a special school that I have had the privilege of leading for the past eight years.  During this time I have had the opportunity to form relationships with your children and families, work with amazing teachers and staff, and lead the development of a learning community for children and adults.  It is with a wide range of mixed emotions that I write today to share that this year will be my last as the principal of Hyde-Addison as this summer I will be relocating to Portland, Oregon to join my fiancee.

Leaving a community and school that is so dear to me is not an easy decision, but I am confident Hyde-Addison is in a terrific place for the next leader to take the helm.  We have a truly exceptional staff; a living and rigorous curriculum; a clear vision, mission, and charge; and plenty of work to do in service of our amazing students!  I am working closely with our staff to ensure our last seven weeks of school are marvelous learning experiences for all of our students while preparing for the 2014-2015 school year with long range planning and recruitment and selection of new staff.  We are also eagerly planning for the Phase 1 Modernization of the Hyde Building which will begin on Saturday, June 21. Old Georgetown in Color: The Finger

GU Rooftop

Today in Old Georgetown in Color, GM brings some color to an off-color scene: the sight of a bunch of GU students sunning themselves on the roof of Copley Hall in 1937, with one of the students flipping the bird to the camera. The photo is curtesy of GU Library and came to GM’s attention via Ghosts of DC.

According to Ghosts of DC, among those pictured include John F. Detmer (C’1938); Henry M. Leslie (C’1938); Daniel J. ‘Bud’ O’Donovan (C’1938); and Edward P. Sweeney, (C’1938). Chances are some, if not all, of these men were in uniform a few years later. Continue reading
