Even Greater Temporarily Closed Sign

IMG_1078[1]

Back in June, GM noted that the “temporarily closed” sign on Georgetown Dinette was either a great “temporarily closed” sign, or the greatest. The sign stated:

June 09 2012

Dear Friend

We are away from store about two weeks for family matter.

We are very sorry.

Don’t be mad, sad, cry.

We’ll be back soon and happy together again.

Emmy and Harry

Well Emmy and Harry were back in top form in November when they put up the sign above. This one manages the express the warmth of the first one, but with the horse dancing reference it even adds some topical electoral humor on top.

Georgetown Dinette is about the opposite of the fanciest place in town, but it may have the most character per square foot of any place in Georgetown.

Holiday Concerts Coming Up

It seems like this time of year the only acceptably cool response to the omnipresence of Christmas music is to act like it’s the worst part of the season, like summer’s humidity or spring’s tourists. GM rejects that. From the moment the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers are first packed away till New Years, GM surrounds himself in a bubble of holiday tunes.

So if you too are looking for a few more holiday tunes to cram in, check out these concerts around Georgetown coming up:

The Barnes and Hampton Celtic Consort – Dumbarton Concerts

This Saturday at 4 pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 4 pm, the Dumbarton Ave. Methodist Church holds its annual candlelight Christmas concert. This year the Barns and Hampton Celtic Consort will perform.

Georgetown University Jazz Ensemble

Today at 1:15 at McNeir Hall on the GU campus, the Georgetown University Jazz Ensemble will present its annual Christmas concert. Admission is free!

Eric Felton Jazz Orchestra – Blues Alley

Next Tuesday, at 8 pm and 10 pm, the Eric Felton Jazz Orchestra will perform its Duke Ellington Nutcracker Suite at Blues Alley.

That should holdover even the most dedicated fan of holiday music. Now please excuse GM while he puts on some Christmas Cookin’.

Dave Brubeck – 1920 – 2012

Yesterday the great Dave Brubeck passed away. GM’s always had a special place in his heart for Brubeck, so he’d like to take today to share some of memories of this great jazzman.

GM grew up in the town Brubeck called home for the last 50 years. Before GM knew anything about Time Out or “Take Five”, he knew Brubeck as the guy whose house sometimes had a great haunted house on Halloween.

Long after those days, GM finally listened to Brubeck’s work and grew to appreciate the art behind it (as an alto saxophonist himself, GM probably was first drawn more to Paul Desmond).

Years later, when GM was fooling around with a music looping program on his computer he decided to give a shot at remixing a tune. He didn’t have to think long about what song he’d try. The results (embedded above) are hardly stellar, but it was truly done with heart. Continue reading

What’s More Valuable: A Bikeshare Station or Three Parking Spots

Back in November, DDOT moved the Capital Bikeshare station, that was on the sidewalk of Wisconsin Ave. by the canal, about 20 feet south and into the street. This was reported at the time by the Patch. DDOT explained that with the eventual construction of the new condo building where the Verizon parking lot is, there would not be enough space on the sidewalk for the station.

Moving the station into the street would necessitate eliminating three metered parking spots. To mitigate the impact of that change, the ANC requested that DDOT convert a loading zone across the street into a metered space and to introduce multi-space also across the street to enable more cars to park there.

When the parking spots were removed, the grumbling began. Most of it originated from Grace Episcopal, in front of which the parking spaces were removed. A church bulletin read:

While Grace supports the Bikeshare program (we have members that frequently bike to services), many members of our congregation rely on convenient access to street parking to attend services here. They include older members with health issues, families with young children and others for whom cycling to church is not an option. The loss of these three spaces is already being felt.

ANC chair Ron Lewis mentioned at the ANC meeting Monday night that he expected a compromise to be found whereby the station would be moved somewhere else. And GM is happy to support a compromise that each side can live with. But this situation presents a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate just how disproportionate the impact car parking has versus bike parking. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Innocent people generally don’t Google “Mexican Extradition” the night their wife is murdered.
  • How the rest of the city (or at least large swaths of it) can become a little bit more like Georgetown.
