Shophouse to Open Up in Old Furin’s Space

Old Georgetown Board records indicate that a new tenant for the old Furin’s space at 2805 M St. has been found: Shophouse.

Shophouse is a new concept from the company behind the Chipotle chain of restaurants. It is an attempt to do for Asian cuisine what the other restaurant did for Mexican food. That is, bring the “fast casual” concept to a food category known more for greasy spoon type establishments. (And what’s “fast casual”? A restaurant that doesn’t offer table service but promises higher quality food than your typical pay-first-fast-food restaurant. DC has been somewhat overrun with them recently, which GM doesn’t necessarily think is a bad thing.) Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Georgetown used to be bordered to the east by Vinegar Hill and was a hop-skip-and-a-jump to Hell’s Bottom.
  • “The mission of [Georgetown] Day seems also to have lost clarity over this time- what began in 2000 as a celebration of the campus community in all its parts has shifted to being a celebration bythe community, or more accurately, by the student community.” GM’s read this statement by a GU administrator ten times and he still doesn’t understand it.

Construction Finally Begins on Waterfront Fountain/Ice Rink

Construction has finally begun on the plaza at the Washington Harbour complex. As you may know, MRP Realty is planning to completely overhaul the fountain. For the warm months, they are building it to provide a waterworks extravaganza. Charlie McGrath, Senior Vice-President at MRP, told GM that the model they apparently are gunning for is the Bellagio fountain in Vegas:

They likely won’t have music or be quite as extravagant, but the idea is that they will be more dynamic than your typical boring fountain. Continue reading

Mike Daisey to Speak at GU Tonight

Photo Courtesy of the New York Times.

Tonight at Georgetown University, controversial playwrite Mike Daisey is speaking on labor issues and capitalism:

In an age dominated by corporatism at the birth of the new globalism, what does it mean for human beings to speak? Mike Daisey, author and monologist, creator of “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs,” examines the threads of dominance and submission that bind together the story of labor across our globe, and ties that story to action. He examines the ways that our imagination has failed this age, and how the oldest human arts can come together with the latest social platforms to amplify our voices in ways unknown a generation ago. By provoking us to confront our assumptions, he tears open the shutters we unknowingly close, and sheds a different light on a story that was always sitting right in front of us.

All very interesting, but the more interesting thing about Daisey is that last week This American Life issued a retraction for a piece it did in January about Daisey’s show “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs.” The problem is that in Daisey’s one-man-show he discusses work conditions at China’s infamous Foxconn factory (where many Apple products are made). Certain work conditions his play presents as actually happening did not actually happen (such as the factory having armed guards or that 13 year-olds worked there). This American Life got enmeshed in this because it presented the conditions discussed in Daisey’s play as being factual. Continue reading
