Meeting Thursday to Discuss Evermay Conversion

Last year one ridiculously rich couple, Ryuji Ueno and Sachiko Kuno, bought both the stately Halcyon House and the giant Evermay estate. Initial reports suggested that they were going to live in one, and throw parties in the other (that’s just what you do when you’re the .0001%). More recently, however, the couple has filed an application with the city that clarifies exactly how they plan to use the properties.

Ueno and Kuno made their money in biotech, but like many wealthy magnates before them, they have now turned to charity. They set up the S & R Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting scientific and artistic endeavors among young people. They would like to turn Evermay into the headquarters for this foundation. But to do so requires a zoning variance, and so the couple has filed for one. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Despite securing the option to sign a new long term lease at Scheele’s, the Lees have decided to retire. The neighborhood group that negotiated to gaurantee a market remain at the property for at least the next 15 years will now seek a new market operator. Make sure to stop by and wish the Lees well.
  • New food truck regulations unlikely to bring any change to Georgetown.

Georgetown Needs a Master Transportation Plan

Someday Georgetown is going to have its own Metro stop. GM might be old and retired by then, but it is going to happen. It will revolutionize how people get to and leave Georgetown, finally erasing a decades old short-sighted mistake by Metro planners.

But Georgetown can’t wait until then to better manage its transportation network. And the thing is, people aren’t waiting. Several different groups are working to bring transportation changes to Georgetown. The problem is that they’re not working together and there’s no overarching plan to organize the efforts.

For example, the BID and CAG are working with DDOT on how the streetcar will come to the neighborhood. A completely different working group is working towards bringing performance parking to Georgetown. Yet another group has long term plans to widen the sidewalks along Wisconsin Ave. and possibly M St.

One plan calls for the construction of an in-fill Metro stop between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom (the idea being that using a ventilation duct as the backbone of a new station would be much less expensive than a new Metro line). Others want to tear down the Whitehurst. Yet others want more bike lanes. Others still want transit-only lanes.  Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Carol Joynt checks out the new pie place that you probably didn’t notice opening.
  • Yesterday GM was browsing through Galerie L’Enfant and saw a pair of mirrors he liked. He was surprised to see how inexpensive they were at $125 for the pair. But then he noticed the “,000” after the “$125”. Yeah, it’s that kind of store.

Calling All Artists

GM was a little derelict in getting out notice, but today is your last day to apply to participate in CAG’s 2012 art exhibit. So if you’re an artist, get that application in today.

The show itself will be Presidents Day weekend (starting Thursday February 16th through Monday the 20th) at the elegant House of Sweden. The show is open to all artists who either live or work in Georgetown. You can show up to four pieces, depending on space. The entry fee is $50.  To apply, either call the CAG office at 202-337-7313 or email them at cagmail@cagtown.org.

This is a fantastic event and a great way to remind yourself just how much talent is roaming Georgetown.
