ANC Roundup: Tudor Place Preview

Ok, so last week GM predicted a relatively short ANC meeting this week. He was woefully wrong. The meeting was a 4 1/2 hour beast. Sadly, that left little time for GM to write up a sizable summary before hitting the sack.

So as not to leave you totally bereft of an ANC summary, GM will briefly discuss the real heart of the meeting: Tudor Place.

Tudor Place has been working on a plan over the past several years to radically overhaul it’s physical plant. As it stands now, the Tudor Place Foundation keeps the property’s vast collection of 17th-20th century artifacts and papers inside the historic home in very unsafe conditions. Since the building is not well designed to prevent fires, floods, pests, and other threats to both the structure and the possessions, the current situation is not sustainable.

Kicking a Guy When He’s Down

This large sign has been sitting outside the Hurt Home since the summer. After the primary some wiseacre has modified this sign to kick Fenty when he’s down. If you can’t make it out, it says “Adrian M. Fenty, Ex Mayor” and later it reads “Creating Economic Opportunities for the District of Columbiafraternity brothers.”

Whoever wrote it must be very pleased with himself since after writing it initially, he came back with a darker pen and traced over his opus to make it easier to read.

For what it’s worth, there haven’t been any accusations that Argos Group is in anyway connected with Fenty’s fraternity.

GM doesn’t support graffiti like this, but really, these vanity signs are pretty bad in the first place. They use public funds to serve one purpose: increase the mayor’s approval rating. This one is particularly bad since: A. Fenty’s name is about 50% larger than all the other text, B. It provides no useful information about the project, and C. It’s freaking huge.

GM hopes (but doesn’t expect) that Vincent Gray won’t waste our money on self-congratulatory signs like this.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Hardy School continues to be a flashpoint over school reform in the District. Surprisingly, Vince Gray was willing to weigh in on the topic at last week’s Q&A Cafe and appeared to be hinting that he’d return Pope to Hardy.
  • GM missed this last week, but the Current reported that it appears that Vornado is taking over control of the mall. The article stated that ownership is now free and clear, but for what it’s worth, EastBanc’s lawsuit for ownership of the mall appears to be still active.

Capital Bikeshare Arrives Next Week

As GM has been reporting, Georgetown is on the list to receive a couple Capital Bikeshare stations. We weren’t, however, among the first neighborhoods to get the stations when they started up in September.

But the wait should be over next week. DDOT confirmed to GM that the K St. station should be installed early next week. It will go in the parking lane in front of the House of Sweden at K and 29th.

The second station on Wisconsin just below the canal should be installed the week after. Continue reading
