Georgetown Real Estate Market Rebounds Somewhat
Yesterday, GM reported on the continued gradual decline crime for Georgetown, today he talks about the rebound, as it were, in the the Georgetown real estate market last quarter.
Sixty-eight homes were sold in Georgetown last quarter. That’s a jump from the prior quarter’s measly 40. That’s hardly a high standard to beat. Perhaps a better comparison is to the second quarter of 2009. Even against those numbers, though, last quarter was an improvement.

Crime Ticks Down for the Second Quarter

Crime in Georgetown continued to stay low for the second quarter of this year versus last year, although it was up significantly from the first quarter’s sharp decline.
The total number of crime incidents for the second quarter was 229, down just 3.38% from last year’s second quarter total of 237. The 229 total was up sharply against the first quarter’s total of 171, but that quarter was unusually quiet, most likely a result of the snow storms. As you can see from the chart of total crime incidences over the past 10 quarters, this last quarter was part of a long term gradual decline:

Did You Realize: The U.N. Was Founded Here?

Today GM will present the second in his occasional series: Did You Realize? In the first installment, GM asked whether you realized that IBM was started in Georgetown. Today GM turns to an even grander Georgetown-born organization: the United Nations.
Like IBM, the United Nations arguably had many birthplaces. But also like IBM, the location of the most significant organizing events of the U.N. was right here in Georgetown. Dumbarton Oaks to be specific.
While the concept of a successor to the failed League of Nations was discussed prior to 1944, it was during the late summer and early fall of that year that representatives of the United States, the USSR, France, and China met at Dumbarton Oaks to establish the formal structure and principles of the U.N. At the conference, the representatives set forth who would be invited to join the U.N., the role of the Security Council, and the veto power of the Security Council’s permanent members.
In April 1945, representatives of the allies met in San Francisco to draft the U.N. charter. After six more years of additional planning and negotiating, the U.N. finally opened in January, 1951.
