Support CAG’s Public Safety Program

For several years, the Citizens Association of Georgetown has run a public safety program that supplements MPD’s normal coverage. It does this by hiring Securitas to patrol the neighborhood and by paying for a reimbursable detail from MPD (where normal MPD officers are paid overtime to work extra hours).

This doesn’t come cheap though. To maintain this program, CAG needs to solicit donations every year. Right now they’re in the middle of one of their fundraisers. So give what you can to support this worthwhile program.

Where Crime Happens in Georgetown

The District of Columbia Crime Policy Institute released an fascinating map yesterday that details crime levels for each census block in the city. Above is a detail of the map showing Georgetown. The darker areas correlate to the higher crime areas.

Unsurprisingly, crime in Georgetown occurs most along the commercial corridors. One thing that immediately jumps out is that the campus of Georgetown University has the highest crime rating. But once you dig into it a little it makes sense. The black areas are blocks with 25 crimes or more per year. Since Georgetown University is once big census block, 25 crimes spread out over a large campus of several thousand for a whole year doesn’t sound so bad.

Here’s what Georgetown looks like compared to the rest of the city:

Thirty Years Ago GU Students Were Just As Good At Ruining Their Lives

The police arrived before the sun was fully up. They took several Georgetown University students under custody on drug related charges. The campus was shocked to hear the news. By noon it was clear the arrested students’ lives were changed forever.

This could describe what happened last Saturday, but in this case GM is talking about slightly earlier events. Thirty years earlier.

At 4:30 AM April 30, 1980, the police raided a home at 1401 Foxhall Rd., which housed a group of Georgetown students. Along with other raids, the cops arrested 8 GU students and 10 other individuals for the sale of cocaine and LSD. Along with the arrests they seized a pound and a half of cocaine and 30 tabs of LSD. Summer Crime in Georgetown Was Bad Even For Summer Crime

Last week, GM explored the third quarter crime numbers and concluded that crime was up this summer. Reader KPE helpfully pointed out that GM was comparing the crime numbers from the third quarter only to the second quarter. Doesn’t crime always tick up during the summer and would this not explain the increase for this year?

Fair enough, so GM went back and recrunched the numbers comparing this past quarter to the third quarters from the prior four years, and the conclusion hasn’t changed: this was a bad summer for crime in Georgetown.

(And before you ask, yes GM is looking at the third quarter, not the “summer.” To the extent that some theories over increases in summer crime depend on the school schedule, looking strictly at quarters might not be the best approach, since it misses late June, when students get out, and captures September when they’re back in session. However, looking at quarters the best way to look at apples to apples, so that’s what GM will stick with for now).

As you can see in the chart above, crime was up in Georgetown this summer compared with the previous four summers. If you’re not a visual learner, here are the numbers:

  • 2006 – 215
  • 2007 – 245
  • 2008 – 230
  • 2009 – 235
  • 2010 – 262

And in most of the categories, Georgetown recorded the highest or nearly highest numbers this summer.

These include robbery:

Crime Ticked Up This Summer

Yesterday GM took a look at the summer real estate numbers and concluded that not much changed from the spring. Today he turns to the crime numbers, and unfortunately the news is not the same. The crime numbers are up overall, although not necessarily where you’d think.

This summer there were 262 crimes reported to MPD. In the spring that number was 230. That’s a 14% jump. Not good. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • WAMU reports on Georgetown’s Patrick Clawson for being the first in the neighborhood to install solar panels on his house.
  • Another brazen iPhone theft (program note: GM will be posting about the summer crime numbers later today).

ANC Round Up: The Remains of the Agenda

As GM mentioned yesterday, Monday night’s ANC meeting was so long that GM was left with no time to write up the whole meeting in time for yesterday. So here’s what you missed:

Crime

Sgt. Hedgecock came by for his monthly report and bore bad news. Georgetown has been struck recently with a spike in muggings, mostly of the iPhone variety. Some robbers are snatching it right out of people’s hands, but some have taken a more violent approach by simply knocking the victims on the ground. This happened twice two weekends ago.

And then of course there was the brazen bank heist on September 30th, which Hedgecock compared to the move “Heat.”

GM will have more on the crime numbers later this week, but the message sent by MPD is mostly two-fold: they’ve changing up their patrols to pay more attention to Sunday through Thursday–when a lot of these crimes occurred–and they’re encouraging residents to not waive their iPhones around. That’s all well and good, but GM hopes they have opportunity to announce some arrests soon.

Meet the New ANC Commissioners, Mostly the Same as the Old ANC Commissioners

Monday night, the ANC gave over the floor to the two candidates to replace the departing commissioners, Aaron Golds and Bill Skelsey. Jeffrey Jones is running to replace Skelsey and Jake Sticka is running to replace Golds.

The one thing that struck GM about their speeches wasn’t so much what they had to say, but rather that this will be yet another two years of an entirely male commission. What’s particularly odd about that is that just about every other Georgetown civic group is disproportionately run by women. For instance, look at CAG’s board, only three of the eleven members are men. GM doesn’t think the ANC is sexist or anything, but it’s just a little odd, don’t you think? Continue reading
