Condo Plans Already in the Works for Fillmore School?

Survey of Historic School Buildings in Georgetown: The Fillmore School

Are plans to convert the Fillmore School into condos already moving forward? That’s the reasonable conclusion from reviewing the ANC meeting agenda for next week, which includes this item:

SMD 01, 1801 35th Street, NW, OG 15-128 (HPA 15-231), Fillmore School (Corcoran Art Center), Alterations to school and new townhouse construction, Concept – Preliminary/General

This sounds awfully similar to the plans that Eastbanc put forward in 2010 before the deal to buy the property from the Corcoran School fell through. At that time, Eastbanc proposed convert the school to approximately 15 units. It also proposed an unspecified number of new rowhouses on the property (GM guessed 16-12, but in retrospect that seems too high).

Is Eastbanc the party seeking approval? GM doesn’t have a clue. We’ll find out more next week.

  1. I assume that the townhouse development would be on the current parking lot. I’m hoping (though not optimistic) that the new development leaves the 35th Street tot lot intact, as that playground is a huge benefit for the neighborhood.
