Georgetown Cupcake by Kyamamoto.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Neighbors let hoards waiting in line for Georgetown Cupcakes that their loyalties lie with Baked and Wired (c/o Vox Populi c/o Suitablegirl)
  • Georgetown house makes PoP’s House of the Day (Personal note: GM once looked into renting an apartment in this house. The rental agent told him he wouldn’t want to live there since the rest of it was rented out to GU students. Now it’s a single family home. How times change…)
  • Reminiscing on Georgetown’s lost theaters.

Georgetown Library to Reopen in October

In reporting the other day that the Georgetown Library cupola was restored, GM stated that the library was targeted for a September reopening. Turns out that was a bit premature. He was contacted by a representative of the DC Public Libraries to inform him that the target month for reopening is October.

GM thought he’d take this errata opportunity to republish his piece from last year describing what’s in store for Georgetown’s newly renovated gem: Continue reading

Update on Those New Liquor License Applicants

In June, the Current reported that the seven establishments likely to be awarded the seven new liquor licenses in Georgetown had already been determined. They were:

  • Puro Cafe
  • Tacklebox
  • Zenobia Lounge
  • Paul Bakery (a new French bakery going in just south of Banana Republic)
  • Bill’s Bar and Burger (a new place moving into the old Cheesesteak Factory)
  • Hu Wear
  • SPINDC

The first four were no great surprise to anybody, and now it looks like they will be the first to get the new license. All four have had their applications approved to be placard and will each have a hearing with ABRA in September. They all will likely be protested by the ANC, which will lead into the inevitable “voluntary” agreement process. Assuming that goes as it normally goes, these establishments should be boozing it up by early winter at the latest. (Paul Bakery was supposed to open by November according to GM’s sources.)

The last two applicants were mysteries in June and they still are.

On the Waterfront: Capital Traction Company Powerhouse

As part of his recently announced new series On the Waterfront, GM is taking a closer look at the buildings that once made up the industrial section of lower Georgetown. Today, GM starts with one of the more significant buildings that once stood along Georgetown’s waterfront: the Capital Traction Company Powerhouse.

Name: Capital Traction Company Powerhouse

Built By: Capital Traction Company

Constructed: 1910

Current Use: Demolished 1968

The Capital Traction Company was one of the two major streetcar companies that serviced the District at the turn of the 20th century. It was the primary streetcar company servicing Georgetown at that time and was centered around the massive Car Barn at 35th and M, which still stands today. Continue reading
