Every once and awhile, GM remembers to get around to updating his “Aren’t They Building” list. And today is one of those onces in a while.
So here’s GM’s updates on the items that need updating:
Paul Bakery
-GM’s old predictions:November 2010spring 2011Late summer 2011
-Clearly GM’s been wrong now three times on this project. But it really does look like it’s opening soon; so GM is going to say November, a full year after the first prediction.Calvin Klein Underwear
-GM prediction: fall 2011
-GM was a bit too conservative, they opened a few months agoAll Saints
-GM prediction: August 2011
-That one was about right.Boutique Hotel on 31st St.
-GM prediction Late 2012
-They are now finally moving forward with this one, but don’t have a new announced date, but late 2012 still seems likely.Georgetown Waterfront Phase II
-GM prediction: –Late 2010 to early 2011August 2011
– They were just one month later.Developing Georgetown Post Office
-GM prediction:2011 at the earliestLate 2012
-This project seems to have been a bit stymied. It’s still moving forward, but the procedure is just taking a lot longer. GM thinks this now won’t come on-line until 2013 at the earliest.Billy Reid
-GM prediction: Fall 2011
-This one was supposed to go into the Riccardi shop on M St., but last time GM checked, Riccardi hadn’t left yet. So it’s unlikely Billy Reid is coming in very soon.Jack Wills
-GM prediction: Winter 2011
-Another one GM was way too conservative on. This one’s been open for months.Saigon Bistro
-GM Prediction: June 2011
-GM can’t remember exactly, but he thinks this new Chinese restaurant opened in July, not June.Fuhggetaboutit
-GM Prediction: Summer 2011
-This new pizza place going in to where the Philadelphia Cheesteak Factory used to be is obviously taking longer than predicted.Michael Kors
-GM Prediction: Early Summer 2011
-That was about right.Redoing O and P Street Streetcar Tracks
-GM prediction: 2012
-We’ll see…K St. Streetcar
-GM prediction: @2016-2018
-UnlikelyWisconsin Ave. Streetcar
-GM prediction: @2020
-Even less likely
As for new additions, this is what GM can think of off the top of his head:
Stachowski Brand Charcuterie – This butcher shop is planning to go into the old Griffin Market. GM predicts it’ll be open Feb-Mar 2012
Unnamed coffee shop – A new coffee shop is supposedly planned for the old consignment shop at P and 27th. GM’s only heard a few rumors, so this probably won’t come to fruition until next spring at the earliest.
O’B Sweet Pies – This store, which appears to be trying to capture some of that Georgetown Cupcake lightning, is supposed to open on M St. next to Dixie Liquors. It’ll probably be open by winter.
Dunkin Donuts – GM’s heard that Dunkin Donuts is trying to move into M St. One location GM thinks they may have their sights set on is the Crepe Amour space. GM is a native New Englander, so it’s somewhat blasphemous for him to say this, but he really doesn’t want to see Dunkins move in and, besides, their coffee isn’t any good [GM ducks behind the desk as various Red Sox-themed commemorative memorabilia is thrown at him].
Einstein Bagelry – Einstein Bagelry was kicked out of their space on upper Wisconsin Ave. several months ago in connection with Safeway’s redevelopment of that building. GM later heard that Einstein’s already has a lease for some of the space in the new building, thus they will eventually return. GM doubts the building will be done until late 2012 at the earliest.
Panera Bread – GM heard that Panera Bread is moving in next to the 5 Guys, but so far it’s just a rumor. GM has no idea when they would open.
PinkBerry – This frozen yogurt restaurant is opening up in the old Sangaree space. They should be open pretty soon.
Is there anything GM’s missing?
Off the top of my head, these are much more questions than updates:
— the Good Stuff Eatery rumors (in the old Fettoosh/Morso space?).
— what will go into the Barnes & Noble space (NikeTown? blech)
— Georgetown Park Mall replacements, as well as Garretts (I can’t imagine that space staying empty for long).
— If the O’B Pies is going in on M Street, rather than 34th and Prospect, does that leave an empty space there? (I remember hearing that the gallery moved out).
– Z-burger on Wisconsin? (I haven’t been paying attention, this may have already opened, but I zoom right past the space on my morning bike commute).
What’s going into the Tommy Hilfiger space? I heard that was supposed to be Billy Reid. There’s construction going on that says “coming soon”
Jacques: Thanks for reminding me on those others. I really don’t have any more info on them though.
TJ: My understanding was that Athleta is going in to the Hilfiger space. And yes, I forgot to mention that one too.

Topher,
PAUL Bakery is opening next week. And a rumor says that Australian retailer Cotton On is interested in street-level space in the area.
