Mike Daisey to Speak at GU Tonight

Photo Courtesy of the New York Times.

Tonight at Georgetown University, controversial playwrite Mike Daisey is speaking on labor issues and capitalism:

In an age dominated by corporatism at the birth of the new globalism, what does it mean for human beings to speak? Mike Daisey, author and monologist, creator of “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs,” examines the threads of dominance and submission that bind together the story of labor across our globe, and ties that story to action. He examines the ways that our imagination has failed this age, and how the oldest human arts can come together with the latest social platforms to amplify our voices in ways unknown a generation ago. By provoking us to confront our assumptions, he tears open the shutters we unknowingly close, and sheds a different light on a story that was always sitting right in front of us.

All very interesting, but the more interesting thing about Daisey is that last week This American Life issued a retraction for a piece it did in January about Daisey’s show “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs.” The problem is that in Daisey’s one-man-show he discusses work conditions at China’s infamous Foxconn factory (where many Apple products are made). Certain work conditions his play presents as actually happening did not actually happen (such as the factory having armed guards or that 13 year-olds worked there). This American Life got enmeshed in this because it presented the conditions discussed in Daisey’s play as being factual. Continue reading

Calling All Artists

GM was a little derelict in getting out notice, but today is your last day to apply to participate in CAG’s 2012 art exhibit. So if you’re an artist, get that application in today.

The show itself will be Presidents Day weekend (starting Thursday February 16th through Monday the 20th) at the elegant House of Sweden. The show is open to all artists who either live or work in Georgetown. You can show up to four pieces, depending on space. The entry fee is $50.  To apply, either call the CAG office at 202-337-7313 or email them at cagmail@cagtown.org.

This is a fantastic event and a great way to remind yourself just how much talent is roaming Georgetown.

Three Years Goes Fast

As GM gets older, he tends to forget when his birthday comes up. Well the same can be said for the Georgetown Metropolitan. It turned three years old last Tuesday.

On December 13, 2008, the first post of the Georgetown Metropolitan was published. Three years and 2,130 posts later, and it’s finally out of its terrible twos.

GM takes these anniversaries as an opportunity to look back at the most popular posts of the prior year. So without further ado:

Georgetown Merriment Changes Tactics

On the first weekend in December for the last two years, the Georgetown BID has closed off a portion of Wisconsin Ave. above M St. and hosted a holiday street fair. While the first year suffered from incredibly cold and windy conditions, last year the weather was more favorable and the event appeared to be establishing itself as a fixture in the calendar.

Sadly, the tradition was short lived. The businesses decided that the event did not have enough of a pay-off at the cash registers to justify the cost of such a large event.

But they’re not giving up on the Merriment idea. Rather than focus on a single large event, the BID has stretched the fun out twelve days, starting this weekend.

Here’s the lineup of events:

Merriment in Georgetown Kick-Off Party
Saturday, December 10th, 1 – 4pm
PNC Bank Lot at Wisconsin & M Street

12 – 4pm

Complimentary pedicab rides from Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom metro stations to Georgetown

1pm & 1:50pm

Georgetown University’s a cappella group — The Georgetown Phantoms Continue reading

One Last Round: GU Campus Plan Hearing Tonight

Tonight the final round of the GU Campus Plan Zoning Commission hearings takes place. The record was held open to consider the plan’s transportation elements, although GM was also under the impression that GU would be given a chance to present its rebuttal to the ANC/CAG/BCA’s testimony. Either way, this is really supposed to be it, so either head on down to One Judiciary Square at 6:30 pm or check it out on the live feed.

GM would love to think this brings us close to the end of this process, but he predicts we’re still years away from that…

Halloween Traffic Restriction in Effect Tonight

As expected, DDOT is shutting down some roads to traffic tonight in anticipation of Halloween crowds. The restrictions are identical to those last year.

The governing theory is to keep traffic off the side streets (because of the kiddies walking around in the dark) and to push all the traffic onto M and Wisconsin. So even though it would be great for the partiers on M St. to shut the whole road down to traffic as they used to, this is probably a safer plan overall. Plus it has the benefit of allowing partiers to catch a cab on M St. and Wisconsin rather than off on a side street.

Here’s a map of the closings. The red streets are streets that are closed to everyone except residents and employees (if it’s a commercial street). The purple streets allow traffic but don’t have any on-street parking:

Taste of Georgetown This Weekend

This weekend the BID hosts one of its most popular annual events: the Taste of Georgetown. The even will be this Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM. Wisconsin Ave. will be blocked off south of M down to K St. for the event.

As always, dozens of Georgetown restaurants will be on hand to offer samples of their goods to ticket-holding visitors. The proceeds of the event go to benefit Georgetown Ministry Center, a homelessness service provider based out of Grace Episcopal. Last year the BID raised $38,000 for the center.

One new feature of this year’s event that jumps out at GM is the new Wine, Ales & Spirits tasting pavilion, sponsored by the Citypaper. Beers including Shiner Bock, New Belgium, and Anchor brewery will be on tap.  Yum.
