Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Georgetown resident appeals to the better angels of the looters, and gets assaulted instead.
  • More on cleanup.
  • Police officers mistakenly told voters they had to go home for the curfew last night, but thankfully polling volunteers quickly corrected him. The final result will likely not be known for a while due to the high number of mail in ballots.

Georgetown Battens Down

After two nights of increasing vandalism targeting commercial establishments in Georgetown, shopkeepers went into lockdown mode last night. In a truly bizarre scene, dozens of construction crews were out throwing up plywood as the sun went down. It was as if a hurricane were about to strike.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Looting in Georgetown Sunday night. A partial list of the stores hit: the CVS, the Intermix, See of Georgetown, Morgans. At the time GM wrote this, Monday night’s damage was unknown.
  • GO VOTE TODAY IF YOU HAVEN’T! The curfew is in effect after 7pm, but the polls are open until 8 pm and you are permitted to be out to vote after 7 pm. That said, it’s probably advisable to do it earlier if possible! GM thinks you should vote for Patrick Kennedy, but just please vote at all!

Georgetown Time Machine: Little Tavern

This week for Georgetown Time Machine, GM is traveling not that long ago, and visiting a building that hardly looks that different, but it’s a fun visit anyhow.

The photo, from 1992 (and the DC Historical Society) is of the northeast corner of N and Wisconsin. It shows the building much as it looked when it was a Little Tavern burger shop.

GM has previously dug into the history of this location. It probably had just closed down the year prior to the photo above, when most of the chain’s locations closed. Here’s what it looked like when it was open:

The building has hardly changed in the years since, even though Paolo’s occupied the space for decades (after briefly being Stousey’s). The original green color of the burger shop is actually showing up as Paolo’s paint continues to peel.

There’s something about the jaunty colors and the sunlight in the top photo that gives the scene a bit of an Edward Hopper vibe. It’s no Nighthawks, but the artist would probably appreciate the scene nonetheless.

Respond to the Census!

Georgetowners, particularly on the west side, have some work left to do in order to satisfy their legal obligation to respond to the decennial census.

Data released by the Census Bureau states that 51% of east Georgetowners have responded to the survey so far. That lags behind the citywide response rate of 56%, which itself lags behind the national rate of 60%. Ten years ago east Georgetowners self responded at a rate of 72% when it was all said and done. (The other 18% were manually counted door-to-door, which is expensive and time consuming! And this year it’s dangerous to boot! And that’s all the more reason you should go online and submit your response.)

West Georgetowners are doing even worse. Only 51% have responded so far. In 2010, they self responded ultimately at a rate of 70%.

We can do better people! We have done better, in fact. Let’s top those 2010 response rate this year!

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Georgetown Cupcake makes the news for the stupidest goddam reason. (They don’t actually even let you line up right now! You can, however, order them by mail! Like voting!)\
  • Brooke Pinto conducted a ham-handed push poll and still lost to Patrick Kennedy in it.
