Circulator Free Rides to End

Well it’s been nice while it lasted, but the free Circulator rides will come to an end for the next DC fiscal year. That’s not until October, so we’ve still got four months of free rides to enjoy.

The end of the freebie came as a result of the Council adopting a 2020 budget. The mayor had requested the funding continue, but the idea was not well received. The problem is basically this: yeah, free bus rides are great for people that can use the free routes, but it doesn’t help all the other riders. Since the Circulator routes by-and-large go through some well off neighborhoods (e.g., Georgetown) the idea of continuing the free ride was viewed as inequitable. In other words: there are better ways to spend that money than to give Georgetowners a free ride to work.

Oh well. It’s probably the right decision, but a bummer none the less.

ANC Preview: Crowded June Edition

Next Monday is the June meeting of the ANC. And though there is another meeting before the mid-summer break, it has the overcrowded feel of a meeting ahead of a layoff.

Here are some of the many items on the agenda:

  • A whole bunch of liquor license renewals, including a request to end a settlement agreement from Angolo’s
  • The proposal to restore the Foundry Branch Trolley Trestle (above)
  • Speed bumps on Water St.
  • DDOT’s maintenance of brick sidewalks
  • A new crosswalk on Wisconsin between M and K St.
  • Cutting down a ginkgo

And of course lots of architectural projects.

The meeting is, as always, at 6:30 Monday night at Georgetown Visitation. Here’s the whole agenda: Continue reading

Ich Bin Ein Mural

This weekend a new mural was being painted on 3401 Water St. It features John F. Kennedy giving one of his more famous speeches, namely the “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech he gave in response to the construction of the Berlin Wall.

The choice of subject is clear when you remember that the building now hosts a German beer hall called the Berliner. (It’s in the space formerly occupied by Malmaison). Continue reading

Arlington Board Approves Boathouse

ARLnow reported earlier this week that the Arlington County board has given a go-ahead on a new boathouse to be built across the river from Georgetown. Last summer, National Park Service and the county published a proposal for the boathouse, advancing several different options. This latest action gives NPS the approval to move forward with the design stage.

The proposal is for a couple buildings, including a 14,000 square foot boathouse along the channel south of Roosevelt Island, just down the river from Key Bridge. It would also include a building with bathrooms. Continue reading
