Dumbarton Oaks Gardens Open Soon

The long wait will soon be over: Dumbarton Oaks Gardens will be open again to the public. They have been closed since last July in order for the institution to perform significant upgrades to the systems.

And with this early spring causing forsythia and daffodils to burst out, the gardens are opening just in the nick of time. The gardens are spectacular pretty much any time of the year, but with the cherry grove, the ancient wisteria, and fragrant magnolias, they’re really at their peak in the spring. Continue reading

More Coffee on the Way

Are there too many coffee shops in Georgetown? We may soon find out. Signage for the latest addition to the java scene appeared recently. The shop, Bluestone Lane, will take over half the space that Frye Company occupied at 1066 Wisconsin Ave.

GM actually first reported this addition last April. It was unclear at the time whether the shop would displace Frye Company or perhaps move in upstairs. Now it’s clear that it is only partially displacing Frye. Continue reading

America Eats Tavern To Take Over Old Glory Space

Well that was fast. Just Monday we found out that Old Glory was closed. GM (and many others) speculated that a boring bank or women’s fashion chain would move into the space. But those fears were misplaced! In fact a restaurant would be taking over the spot. And the restaurant in question is Jose Andres’s America Eats Tavern. Continue reading

M Street Dining Takes Another Body Blow

As mentioned in the morning link post, Old Glory has closed suddenly. This is real loss for the community and it continues a very alarming trend for Georgetown: restaurants just can’t keep open on M St.

GM has documented this trend for a while. As early as 2014 (and really before) there has been a steady decline in restaurants on M St. Just last month GM was noting that with the closure of Unum, Pier 2934, and Maxime, restaurants along M St. were down to 23. With Old Glory that brings it down to 22. When GM started counting back in 2008 the number was 45. Continue reading
