The Stores of Georgetown 2019 – A Sneak Peek

Spurred on by the BID’s event last week, GM finally got around to doing his annual-ish census of the stores of Georgetown. (The last census was last October, so GM was actually more close to annual than his normal practice of letting is slip a few more months.)

While he is still compiling and QC’ing the data, here are a couple top line numbers:

  • There are 507 stores, restaurants, etc. in Georgetown
  • 35 shops opened
  • 37 shops closed
  • 8 shops moved within Georgetown

Jack Evans Recall Effort Turns in Signatures

The effort to recall Jack Evans reached a significant milestone yesterday: it turned in roughly 5,600 signatures to the Board of Elections.

This does not mean that Evans is out of a job, yet at least. The activists seeking his ouster needed to submit petitions signed by at least 10 percent of the Ward 2 registered population. That is approximately 5,000 people. But there’s a big difference between submitting signatures and submitting valid signatures. Some number of the signatures submitted will surely turn out to be from people not actually registered in Ward 2. Those signatures will be ignored. With a cushion of only 600 or so, there’s a fairly decent chance enough signatures will be successfully challenged by Evans and the recall effort will end there. Continue reading

Foxtrot Market Sounds Pretty Cool, Honestly

GM mentioned last week that among the future openings announced at the BID/ANC event was a restaurant named Foxtrot. It’s coming to the former Jonathan Adler space at Wisconsin and N St. But as GM has learned a little more about this place, he’s actually rather excited for it.

Foxtrot is actually called Foxtrot Market. It’s a small company that started in Chicago. It has seven locations in the Windy City. It has branched out a bit with a location in Dallas (and another on the way). Continue reading
