Dumbarton Oaks

The Washington City Paper reported this week that the space that was formerly host to Sea Catch, a sprawling old seafood restaurant, will soon host Dyllan’s…a sprawling seafood restaurant.

WCP’s Laura Hays reports:

The best seat in the house at Dyllan’s Raw Bar Grill isn’t a seat at all. For an ideal experience at the 13,000-square-foot restaurant aiming to open in Georgetown by the end of the month, plant two feet in front of the 40-foot marble raw bar. There, frenetic bartenders will be doing everything from popping Champagne and pouring Muscadet to shucking oysters and rolling sushi.

Hays also reports that the restaurant is the baby of Donald Carlin, who was previously the director of restaurants for Stephan Starr (the restauranteur behind La Diplomate, among other well respected establishments). And this might be only the first Georgetown location for him:

He’s so smitten with Georgetown that he’s considering Dyllan’s the first in a series of restaurants. “This area is a winning horse,” he says. “This place has been starved for a really great restaurant group.”

• Some more info on the forthcoming Aritzia store. The article also reports that Patagonia will move from its current building to the old Mr Smith’s location on M St…
• …which is kind of an odd move, no? Grace and Wisconsin is the epicenter of millennial spending in Georgetown right now. Why would Patagonia want to leave that? And doesn’t that building have a ton of potential now?

GM is sorrey to inform you that the great Canadian invasion has continued.  After Roots took a beachhead on M St., a new threat from the Great White North has arrived.

Specifically, in the old space that house BCBG at Wisconsin and M will soon be home to Aritzia.

GM had frankly never heard of this store before. And if anything would have assumed it was vaguely Italian. But no. It is Canadian. British Canadian to be specific. Continue reading →

GM is always haranguing you to water your street trees. Well now consider the haranguing elevated to vociferous haranguing. Other than a light drizzle  yesterday, and a possible downpour today, it has has basically not rained at all in DC for over a month.

That is really bad! And unusual! And it’s really bad for street trees especially. So please, please, please: if you have a relatively young tree on your block, water it at least 20 gallons every week. That means filling the tree bag, if it has one, or letting a hose lightly water the roots for a half and hour. Continue reading →
