Verizon Building Condos Go on Sale Soon

IMG_2918

The condos in the building formerly known as the “Verizon Building” will be on sale soon, as detailed on the project’s website 1055High.com.

The new name for the project is actually a rather old one: 1055 High. While “high” could be referencing many aspects of this property–not the least of which is the price–it almost certainly is a reference to the old name of Wisconsin Ave.: High St. Continue reading

ANC Preview: All On-Board With Metro Edition

There is a long held myth in DC that the reason there’s no Metro stop in Georgetown is that rich Georgetowners objected and kept it out (the myth normally implies, or just states, that the motivation for fighting the Metro was racist.) This is not true. It really can’t be said enough times: the reason there’s no Metro stop in Georgetown has nothing to do with any protests from Georgetowners. Period.

Yet the myth persists, probably because it both confirms and is perpetuated by common stereotypes about Georgetowners.

Jump to today. Metro is currently pulling together ambitious plans for what the system will look like by the middle of this century. Among the menu of options the long term planners are considering is a brand new Metro line through the heart of downtown, with one or even two stops in Georgetown.

In a flip of the supposed history of Georgetown (and again: false history), civic organizations are lining up pleading with Metro to bring a Metro stop to Georgetown as soon as possible. Continue reading

Holiday Concerts

IMG_2851[1]

One of the best parts of the holiday season is getting out and enjoying a holiday concert around town. And Georgetown has plenty to offer in the department. Check out these opportunities:

Overtures at Evermay

The S & R Foundation continues its Overtures series right through the holidays. GM was treated to a ticket last weekend to see the resident Evermay Chamber quintet perform. While the music was not itself holiday-themed, the house is decked out in festive decor. And, as always, they treat you well with plenty of food and drink before and after the concert. It’s especially nice to stroll outside the house at night and see the city aglow at your feet.

Friends of Music at Dumbarton Oaks

Here’s another opportunity to hear great music in an incredible surrounding: the Friends of Music series at Dumbarton Oaks. GM has been going to this series for ten years, and it’s provided some of the most impressive performances he’s ever seen.

The holiday concert will be Piffaro, the Renaissance Band on December 1 & 2. The tickets are generally by subscription only, but if you’re interested you can call and see if any tickets are available for purchase.

Dumbarton Concerts

Sticking with the Dumbarton theme: the Dumbarton Concerts at the Dumbarton Methodist Church will be holding a Celtic Christmas throughout December. Check out the dates and tickets here.

Dumbarton House

There are a lot of places in Georgetown named Dumbarton. Yet another one, Dumbarton House, will hold a free concert on December 17th at 12:00. Details here.

Funny side story: GM was married at Dumbarton House. In the months leading up to the event, when he would tell people where it was, some would get this surprised look with wide-eyes and say “Wow!”. It was then that GM knew that they thought he meant Dumbarton Oaks.

Georgetown University

The University Chapel Choir will be performing an Advent festival of lights and carols at Holy Trinity Church on December 6th.

If GM is missing anything, please add it to the comments!
