Latham Hotel to be Converted to Mini Apartments

Michael Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal has a great scoop on the future of the Latham Hotel property: it’s being converted to apartments. And not just typical apartments; mini-apartments.

Neibauer writes:

SB-Urban, a new venture from Mike Balaban and Frank Saul III, has a contract to purchase The Latham from Texas-based Lone Star Funds, numerous sources familiar with the deal confirm…a site plan that accompanies the [letter to the Zoning Administrator] suggests there will be roughly 122, most in the 250- to 400-square-foot range. The Latham Hotel had 133 rooms.

The plans that Neibauer include make it look like the hotel rooms will simply be converted to apartments. Think about the last time you were in a hotel room; now imagine living there. Continue reading

Now and a Long Time Ago: Prospect and 37th

Pit vs new

It’s been a while, but GM is back with a Now and a Long Time Ago. Today’s he’s eschewing the techy swipe feature and just merging the old and the new in one photo. What we see is Prospect St. just west of 37th St. (what is now immediately south of Lauinger Library). The old photo is from 1951 and comes courtesy of DDOT’s fantastic brochure on the history of the O and P St. trolley tracks. Continue reading

West Heating Plant Plans Made Public

West Heating Plant

UPDATE: GM had the dates wrong. The charette is next Tuesday, October 8th.

Next weekTonight the public will finally get its first glimpse at the plans that the Levy Group/Four Seasons have in store for the West Heating Plant property. The meting tonight will be focused mainly on the public park-elements to the plan. This will be followed up by a wider discussion on the building itself in a couple weeks.

The format of next week’stonight’s meeting is a “charette”, which is a fancy French word for “public input meeting”. GM has seen the plans for the park presented at a private meeting, and they seem pretty complete. So he’s not sure what input is being sought, but there’s always room for modification.

The plans call for a public park on the south side of the property (where the gas tanks are now). The park will be somewhat elevated from the perspective of 29th st., and will flow down to Rock Creek on the east side. It will wrap around the east side of the building and connect to the strip of land on the north side of the building. (Interestingly, from the presentation GM viewed, he learned that the site of the building itself used to be a dry dock for the canal boats.)
