Is Georgetown Properly Prepared for the Future of Sweets?

Over the last eight years or so, Georgetown has really gone whole hog into the sweets business. But can that last?

While mainstay T. Sweets has held down the fort for decades, Georgetown truly began to tie its fortunes to the dessert-trade with the auspicious opening of Georgetown Cupcake in 2008. Between Georgetown Cupcake and Baked and Wired, Georgetown regularly saw one or more of its own on the top of cupcake ratings around town. Not to mention the arrival of the original cupcakery, Sprinkles, a couple years ago. Continue reading

Consignment Store Coffee Shop Back On?

A long time ago, GM heard a rumor that the old consignment shop at 2622 P St. was going to be turned into a coffee shop. Since then, GM hasn’t heard a peep, nor has much work been done on the shop.

However, recently work was finally started on the shop. GM doesn’t have any further information about the owner’s plans yet, but the building permit says this:

Zoning Review Approved . Approved for a 46 seat restaurant in the basement and first floor of the existing building located in C-1 zone. Interior design business will be located on the second floor. No off-street parking required.

Interesting.

Get a Special Tour of Dumbarton Oaks Park Tomorrow

Dumbarton Oaks Park

Tomorrow is one of GM’s favorite annual events in Georgetown: the Georgetown Garden Tour. While most of the gardens on the tour are the typical sort of gardens featured each year, this year the tour will also feature a docent lead tour of Dumbarton Oaks Park.

You may already be familiar with this treasure of a park, but there are probably nooks and crannies in it that you don’t know about (did you realize there’s a pet cemetery there, where multiple horses are buried?).

Come and learn more about this wonderful park. You really ought to be pay and do the full tour, but all you have time for is this part, then you probably don’t have to worry about getting a ticket. Just show up there sometime between 12 and 5 pm.

Support Your Local Indie Rock Star

On May 14th, the indie rock band Vampire Weekend will release its third full length album: Vampires of the City. Stream it here on iTunes (you need iTunes installed, unfortunately) and preorder it.

Why, you ask? Because Rostam Batmanglij, whose multi-instrumental sounds join with Ezra Koenig’s yelps to form the core of the band’s sound, is a Georgetown native. His parents, Najmieh and Mohammad still live in the house he grew up in (Najmieh is a successful chef and author).
