Would You Be Interested in a Georgetown-Only Parking Permit?

As DDOT considers making changes to the way street parking is managed in Georgetown, one idea that gets batted around a lot is to create a new residential parking zone just for Georgetown.

The idea would be to replace our current Zone 2 stickers with a Zone 2E sticker (covering all of ANC 2E, including Burleith). No longer would people from the rest of Ward 2 be able to park all day in Georgetown. But there’s a catch, no longer would Georgetowners be able to park all day in the rest of Ward 2.

This change is premised on the suspicion that many Ward 2 residents from outside Georgetown come here and park all day. Specifically, the assertion is that office workers drive over from Dupont or points east and fill up the side streets. Is there any truth to this? GM hasn’t a clue, but he knows some Georgetowners who do the opposite and they would also be affected by this change. Continue reading

ANC Preview: Next Bus Edition

Next week ANC2E will meet for its April session. By comparison to last month’s brawl over another neighborhood’s traffic changes, this meeting should be downright serene.

One item caught GM’s attention: “Electronic Bus arrival signage in the Georgetown commercial area”

Going back to the Gabe Klein era, DDOT has been floating proposals to install screens at some bus stops that would inform riders of the nearby transportation options and include predicted bus arrival times based upon NextBus. Only a few locations have seen them installed yet, though.

GM doesn’t know why this is on the ANC agenda. It seems unlikely that Georgetown would get one of these screens, given the restrictive signage rules we have. (Don’t get GM wrong, he’s love to see them here, but it’s unlikely). Continue reading

Yet Another Cooke’s Row Manse For Sale

3000 block of Q St.

Yet another one of the landmark Cooke’s Row houses is for sale. These houses are a group of seven houses on the north side of Q St. just west of 30th St. They were built in 1868 by Henry Cooke, the first governor of the territory of DC (we were a territory briefly until Cooke’s successor, the infamous Alexander “Boss” Shepard, drove us into bankruptcy with lavish public works projects. We didn’t get home rule back until 1972).

Right now two of the homes are for sale. The first is 3023 Q St., which was occupied by Cooke himself:

These homes are quite large and exquisitely detailed in the then popular Second Empire style (although they also display some elements of Italianate style). Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Suspicious odor forces evacuating of Georgetown Cupcake. (GM guesses it was the smell of massive piles of tourist money).
  • Owner of Chic, a clothing store on Wisconsin, passed away Saturday at his shop. Police are attributing it to natural causes.

What’s Your First Georgetown Memory?

GM recently took part in a focus group being run by the BID designed to find out what Georgetowners like or dislike about the neighborhood and what could be done to improve it. At the beginning of the session, the participants introduced themselves and stated, among other things, what their first memory of Georgetown was. It was an interesting way to kick off a discussion of what people think of the neighborhood.

While GM moved to Georgetown ten years ago, his first memory is much older than that. In the mid 80s, his family came down to DC from Connecticut for something or another (it was either part of a visiting fife and drum corps or the time GM’s brother won the Sea Breeze Award for “teenager of the year” and got to meet Nancy Reagan and Ms. America). Either way, GM remembers bunking up with his family in one room at the Hotel Harrington.

The Georgetown memory is of waiting forever to get a table at the legendary Geppetto’s Pizza, which once occupied the space currently housing Unum. Growing up the in northeast, GM had never experienced pizza that thick. Through the compound interest of memory, that pizza is still the best pizza GM ever ate. Continue reading
