Deal on Jelleff Reached

As hinted at during the ANC roundup, a deal for the city to purchase the Jelleff Branch property of the Boys and Girls Club (as well as two other club properties) has been reached. Fox 5 has the footage:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

That protester is long time School Board member William Lockridge. According to the Post, the property he’s talking (well, shouting) about has already been sold to a charter school. Although GM agrees that a charter school doesn’t offer the same community benefits that a Boys and Girls Club (or a similarly operated recreational center) does.

Nathans Signs Lease

Nathan's Signs Lease

Carol Joynt sent out a email blast last night announcing that Nathans has signed a leased to remain at the corner of Wisconsin and M. This comes after years of uncertainty for the restaurant. This is great news for the neighborhood.

If there are any gray clouds to this silver lining, it’s that the lease is not tied to a specific term. Continue reading

Griffin Market Chef to Helm Comet Ping Pong

GM didn’t notice the Georgetown angle when he first read about the soap opera at the Chevy Chase pizza joint Comet Ping Pong. Apparently Griffin Market chef and co-owner Laura Bonino will take over as chef at the restaurant.

The new version of Griffin Market that opened last year has been a huge boon the the neighborhood. Under the previous management, the market had declined in quality significantly. It didn’t help that they were robbed several times. Happily, Laura and Riccardo Bonino purchased the market last year and converted the market into an Italian specialty store. It offers European groceries and Italian deli fare. Moreover, it’s a great choice for catering. They catered GM’s post-wedding picnic and it was a huge success.

While GM hopes this won’t affect the offerings at Griffin Market, he nonetheless congratulates Bonino.

ANC Round Up: The Fast Show

7:57 PM.

That was the adjournment time of tonight’s ANC meeting. Assuming the meeting kicked off at 6:30 (GM was a few minutes late), the meeting was a mere hour and a half. That must be some sort of a record. Let’s go to the video tape:

Reminder – ANC Meeting Tonight

The June ANC meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 at Visitation. GM did a run-down a few days ago, but there’ s one update: there will be no gay marriage resolution. GM’s still trying to track down the details, but it seems that the resolution was delayed to better coordinate with a citywide push to encourage the Council to recognize gay marriage. As soon as GM gets more details he’ll share them with you.
