That Didn’t Take Long: Councilmember Thomas Comes Out Against Jellef Deal
Last week, after it was revealed that the city would pay $15 million to purchase the Jellef Branch of the Bots and Girls Club GM predicted that the expenditure was certain to come under scrutiny, if not open protest. Well, the push-back has already begun.
Carol Buckley of the Georgetown Current reports this week that Ward Five Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. considers the city’s proposed purchase of the property to be “financially irresponsible”. Thomas stated that the purchase would delay already-approved parks projects in Wards Five and Six.

Georgetown Start-Up Dominates Facebook, Facilitates Pointless Ranking
What are your five favorite bands? How about your five favorite movies? How about your five favorite fast food restaurants? If you’re a Facebook user, these inane questions probably sound awfully familiar. That’s because the ubiquitous social networking site has been lousy recently with people announcing to the world their top five favorite-things-that-nobody-else-cares-about. The application that enables this pointless ranking system is called LivingSocial, and surprisingly enough it was developed by a start-up company based right here in Georgetown.
And as of this week, LivingSocial became the number one Facebook application, registering 20 million active users. In doing so, it knocked out of the top spot another application called Causes that helps charities raise money.

CAG Hosts WASApalooza
Tonight the Citizens Association of Georgetown held its April meeting and the subject of the evening was WASA. WASA Engineering and Technical Services Director David McLaughlin gave the audience a detailed breakdown of all the big projects the agency is planning for the next decade or so, both citywide and in Georgetown-proper. GM knows this sounds like dreadfully boring information, but it’s actually quite fascinating how many huge projects there are in the works. Check out some of them after the jump:

Obamas Dine Out in Georgetown
Saturday night the President and his family had their first night out to a private dinner since he took office. They spent the evening here in Georgetown at Valarie Jarret’s house. The Chicago Sun Times reports:
From the pool report: “This was a family occasion at the home of Valerie Jarrett, long-time Chicago friend of the Obamas’ and now senior White House advisor. Daughters Malia and Sasha and what appeared to be three of their girls friends accompanied the president and first lady at what was described as their first private dinner party away from the White House.”
Jarrett lives at 3309 Water St.
