How Much Would You Be Willing to Pay for Safer Streets?

Last month, GM proposed the creation of a Georgetown Citizens’ Improvement District. The basic idea is to take the Business Improvement District model and apply it to residents, not just businesses.

This would entail creating some sort of a special taxing district for Georgetown. The funds would be set aside to be spent by an elected board on projects and items strictly in Georgetown. The list of things that this money could be spent on is endless, but GM speculates that the consensus first candidate for funds would be an increase in reimbursable details from MPD.

A reimbursable detail is an MPD police officer who works overtime and is paid from a private source. Both CAG and the BID support reimbursable details in Georgetown already. However, the officers are primarily focused on the main corridors, not the back streets. A Citizens’ Improvement District could pay for more of a police presence in the residential parts of Georgetown. Continue reading

Crime Way Down for Georgetown in the First Quarter of 2010

With the unfortunate exception of stubbornly persistent robberies, overall crime was way down for Georgetown during the first quarter of 2010. The largest declines came from theft from autos.

GM guesses that the largest single factor for the reduction was the historic snow fall in February. Too bad we can’t have one of those storms every quarter.

Here’s the break-down:

ANC Round-Up: The Sublime and the Profane Edition

As announced in GM’s ANC Preview last week, Ugg Australia will be moving to the old Diesel location on Wisconsin. GM’s already had his say about his take on the popular boots, but he will add that the store design presented last night was down right tasteful. And it’s this balance of the sublime and the profane that seemed to define last night’s meeting.

Trolley Tracks

DDOT came by to update the community on their plans to rehab the trolley tracks on O and P Streets (actually, technically these are streetcar tracks since trolleys are streetcars that use overhead wires, which weren’t used on these streets).

The Sublime: What these streets will look like. Eventually. The tracks will be ripped up, repaired, and replaced with a newly secured foundation. The cobblestones will be ripped up, cleaned up, and replaced. The tracks will be flush with the cobblestones, hopefully preventing any more dangerous driving conditions. The sidewalks will be repaired and the trees protected or replaced.

The Profane: It’ll take a long time to finish. DDOT is estimating 18 months. GM is estimating at least two years. During which travel will be severely disrupted on those streets. Continue reading

Argument Over Dog in Montrose Park Leads to Arrest Warrant

In Montrose Park there exists a self-regulating society of dog walkers. Sit there for a little while, and you’ll see the society part: dozens of dog owners who all seem to know each other as “the owner of so-and-so.”  Stay a little longer and chances are you’ll see the self-regulating part.

When a dog gets a little out of hand, the other dog owners are normally pretty quick with a harsh reprimand along the lines of “you need to control your damn dog!” It seems to work.  But even the stern hand of peer pressure isn’t always enough.

And one of those times happened on February 11th. A neighbor was out in Montrose Park taking photographs of the snow when another neighbor’s dogs started threatening him (GM was told who their names, but couldn’t confirm it yet). He asked the other neighbor to control his dogs. Harsh words were exchanged and the dog owner ended up assaulting the photographer. Continue reading
