Halloween Traffic Restrictions in Effect Tonight

As expected, DDOT is shutting down some roads to traffic tonight in anticipation of Halloween crowds. The restrictions are identical to those last year.

The governing theory is to keep traffic off the side streets (because of the kiddies walking around in the dark) and to push all the traffic onto M and Wisconsin. So even though it would be great for the partiers on M St. to shut the whole road down to traffic as they used to, this is probably a safer plan overall. Plus it has the benefit of allowing partiers to catch a cab on M St. and Wisconsin rather than off on a side street.

Here’s a map of the closings. The red streets are streets that are closed to everyone except residents and employees (if it’s a commercial street). The purple streets allow traffic but don’t have any on-street parking:

The parking restrictions will be in place from 4:00 PM tonight until the early morning hours of tomorrow. The traffic restrictions will start at 6:30 pm. Continue reading

At Large Candidates Debate Today in Georgetown

This afternoon at 4:00, four candidates for the DC Council At-Large election will be debating at St. John’s Church. The debate will be hosted by the Georgetown BID. The invited candidates are current Councilmembers Vincent Orange (D) and Michael Brown (pretend I but really a D), and challengers David Grosso (I) and Mary Beatty (R).

GM has a particular affinity for the At Large elections because it is the only election where independents like him can actually have an effective voice. And this year there appears to be a genuine race on for the second slot (Vincent Orange, despite embarrassing himself during the interim chairman selection, is expected to easily win the “Democratic” seat). Brown has been dogged by accusations that he can’t manage finances after his entire campaign war chest vanished. But he can rely on great name recognition and solid support throughout the city. WalkingtownDC Returns

One of the great annual events held in DC returns again September 23rd: WalkingTown DC. What it is is a series of fantastic free walking tours throughout the city. In some cases they’re commercial walking tours that offer the tours gratis, and in some cases (and typically they’re the more interesting ones) they are organized only for the event.

GM has been doing these for years. His favorite was from a few years ago that was based in Mt. Pleasant and told the story of the neighborhood’s music history as it wound from honky tonk to Hispanic to punk rock.

You don’t have to pay, but in many cases you have to make reservations. This is particularly the case for Georgetown related tours, which fill up well in advance of the day. There are two Georgetown tours this year: Continue reading

Come Out This Saturday for a MPD Meet and Greet

Tomorrow, come on down to the Georgetown Waterfront Park and meet MPD Officer Atkins. This is part of a series of meet and greets that have been organized by the CAG Public Safety Committee. It’s a great opportunity to meet the men and women in blue who protect us.

So stop by tomorrow at 9 am (a time that GM used to think was early, then he had a baby). If it’s raining, head over to Washington Harbour.

Georgetowner Running for the Olympics Tonight

Photo courtesy of the Times Union.

Tonight Georgetown grad and CAG program assistant, Elizabeth Maloy, is competing in the finals of the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. She’s running the 5,000 meters, which GM can tell you, as a former high school distance runner, is a brutal race. But Maloy is more than up to the task. On Monday she ran and won a preliminary heat for the event. If she is one of the top three runners tonight, she’ll be bound for London.

The race is tonight at 10:15. It will be shown on the NBC Sports Network, which is channel 848 on Comcast.

Good luck Elizabeth!

Party The Block For Scheele’s

Through the efforts of dedicated neighbors like Malcolm Peabody, the long term future of Scheele’s Market is secure. To recap: Jordan O’Neill purchased the building from the Scheele family and has signed a covenant with a group of neighbors to keep the market open for at least 15 years. In exchange for the covenant, the neighbors have agreed to pay O’Neill $75,000.

So far the Save Scheele’s fund has raised almost the complete amount it needs. Sixty neighbors have contributed $55,000 total. To push the over the top, tomorrow night there will be a block party. It will kick off at 6:00 and go till 9:00 and will be on 29th between O and Dumbarton. You can bring your donation (a check made out to Friends of Scheele’s) to the party. Continue reading

Next Week is National Small Business Week

Next week is National Small Business Week. It’s an even started by the Small Business Administration to celebrate small businesses across the country. The agency will run a conference all week on topics germane to small businesses. But registration is full and, besides, conferences a incredibly boring.

But that’s no reason not to celebrate! A better way to show your love of small businesses is to actually patronize them. So make a special effort next week to visit any of these small independent shops in Georgetown:

Acqua Nails
Café Divan
Animal Hospital
Talio Hair
Duron
Baytok
Everards
Sky Shoes
Dalton Pratt
Harmony Salon
Bistrot Lepic
Shanghai Lounge
P.O. Boxes Etc.
Carine’s Bridal
First Cash Pawnbrokers Continue reading

Nike Planning Half Marathon to Coincide With New Store

GM has yet to meet a Georgetowner happy about Nike replacing the Barnes and Noble. And you know what else Georgetowners apparently are sick off: road races. Well these two unloved things are possibly going to merge into a single unloved event when Nike holds a half marathon to coincide with the opening of the new store in the spring of 2013.

The Washington Business Journal first reported the possibility of a Nike half marathon in 2013 on Wednesday. After some delay, Nike confirmed that they are considering DC for their Women’s Marathon series. This is consistent with rumors GM has heard.

GM doesn’t know at this point whether the race would even contemplate shutting down Georgetown roads. But you can bet that the ANC would put up a rather large fight if they did seeing as it would be such an explicitly commercial event.

In an alternate universe, Barnes and Noble in bizarro Georgetown is planning a book fair for the spring of 2013…

French Market This Weekend

Starting right now(!) is the annual Book Hill French Market. It runs till 5pm tonight and then runs again from 10 AM to 5 PM tomorrow.

It’s Book Hill’s signature annual event and it’s a great chance to become acquainted with what offerings the little district offers. Many people comment that in many ways it’s sort of the last outpost of “old Georgetown” with its small independent shops. So come out and not only do you get transported to France, you go back in time too!

Come Out This Saturday to See What GU Can Do For Families

This Saturday morning, Georgetown University is hosting local families to come and learn what programs the school offers to the local community which might be of particular interest to parents of young children.

This meeting came about from discussions between the school administration and Ken Archer, friend of GM. There’s a perception (that GM shares) that a lot of Georgetowners aren’t even aware of what programs the school offers to non-students. And, obviously, when you’re not aware of a resource, you don’t take advantage of it. By changing that, it is hoped that a less hostile relationship can be developed between the school and its neighbors as more and more non-students come to realize what a wonderful resource we have in the school.

The thrust of this meeting is partially to let parents know of what programs the school offers, but also for the school to hear about what programs parents would like to see them offer. Some ideas GM has heard batted around include making University space available to child programs (like say Saturday mornings at Yates Field House), or sports clinics. Also, there is a really desire for GU to provide a sort of babysitter clearinghouse function. Continue reading
