This week on Georgetown Time Machine, GM has a fascinating interior shot from the Historical Society of Washington, DC. It is of the Emrich Beef Company Store.

The photo says it is located between 1306 and 1312 32nd St. That’s not where it would seem by today’s map. (Actually there is no 1300 block of 32nd St. today). The photo is from 1894, during the brief period that the street we now call Wisconsin Ave. was called 32nd St. (it was called High Street before that). This particular address is now the location of the Georgetown Inn (a building from the middle 20th century).

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• A peek inside the new L’Annexe cocktail bar. Looks sharp!
• Lots of Georgetown homes on the list of most expensive homes sold so far this year.

1600 block of 31st St.

Georgetown continues to get inundated with extremely unwanted banks. After Chase announced three goddam locations in Georgetown, now United Bank is opening a third one itself.

Specifically, as reported by WBJ, United Bank is opening in part of the space that was most recently a Barney’s Coop at 3030 M St. This is on top of the location at the foot of Wisconsin Ave. and K St. (the former Bank of Georgetown flagship) and the location by the Safeway (which was formerly a Cardinal Bank).

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• Not much Georgetown-specific news today, but residents might be interested to hear about Safeway’s plan to redevelop the nearby (currently closed) Palisades location.Apologies! These are old plans that Safeway is no longer pursuing.
• Also of interest to a certain type of Georgetowner: here is a hilarious profile of Millie’s in Spring Valley.

1400 block of 33rd St.

This past Sunday, DC held its first ever Open Streets event along Georgia Ave. from Howard University to Petworth. For the event, the city completely closed the road to cars from 10 am to 2 pm. Even the cross streets were car free. For those few hours, you could walk three miles along Georgia Ave.–enjoying dozens and dozens of tents, vendors, and events–and not once have to look over your shoulder for a car. It was a wonderful experiment for how a city can be when you take cars out of the equation. Continue reading →

Montrose Park

A lot of people know that Dumbarton Oaks is beautiful in the spring. But GM likes to issue this annual reminder that it’s also quite lovely in the fall:

Dumbarton Oaks is well known for its spring displays of incredible seasonal bounties. But people often overlook how spectacular the acres of gardens are in the fall. Hurry up and catch it now before it’s gone.

But here’s just a taste. The wildflowers of the Herbaceous Border are breathtaking:
