Let’s Keep Our Lights Up!

GM says this every year, but this year his case is stronger than ever: let’s keep up our holiday light longer!

Surely it makes sense to chuck your Christmas tree and stow away your inflatable Santas come January, but it does not follow that you should take down any strings of lights or other greenery as well. We are only just entering the bleakest of midwinter, and making our streets and sidewalks darker makes no sense. And as we lumber on through yet another month of this pandemic, a little extra twinkle of light is all the more necessary.

So please join GM and keep up some lights outside your house at least to February. Our collective mental health will thank you!

The Georgetown Metropolitan Turns Twelve

Exactly twelve years ago on Sunday, the Georgetown Metropolitan first started publishing. It’s been a rough year for all of us, and GM’s happy to simply put this one in the books. Shred the books. Burn the shreddings. Bury the ashes. Under a deep ocean. On Neptune.

In a year’s time, this little publication, which started off so small, will finally get to see PG-13 movies. May we all be healthy and happy when that day comes.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Storefront Covid testing comes to M St.
  • Speaking of new temporary shops, there’s a bookstore pop-up next to the Compass Coffee, and what appears to be an e-bike pop-up in the old Mono Diner space.

Down Goes the Holiday Inn

Spectators in Georgetown were treated to quite the show yesterday morning as the Rosslyn Holiday Inn was demolished with dynamite.

Key Bridge appears to have offered the best view, as the video above attests. GM himself can’t attest because he slept in a bit. He figured that the detonation wouldn’t be set off right at 8:00 am. He was dressed and ready to rush out the door when the charges went off, which was easily heard across the neighborhood. Oh well.

So, here’s to you, Rosslyn Holiday Inn: you were almost entirely forgettable for the length of your existence right up to the moment before you left us.
