Observations on Mask Use
The science is clear: universal mask use is one of the most important tools in our fight against coronavirus. But how well are people abiding with that in Georgetown?
GM has several observations:
Over the last month, mask use has increased in outdoor settings. It seems most people have come around to adopting the practice, perhaps even if they question its efficacy. On quieter side streets, people can be seen walking without them, but they are less necessary there. On Wisconsin Ave., on the other hand, most people are using them.
Last week, GM took a quick unscientific tally of people on Wisconsin Ave. wearing masks. North of M St., 28 of 36 people were wearing masks (77%). There were too many people on M St. to count, but the mask use was still probably above 50%. Continue reading

The Morning Metropolitan
Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Jaco Taco reopened. GM highly recommends the BLT Bagel.
- A Turkish cafe appears to have taken over the short-lived Harper Macaw shop on M St.

As mentioned last week, GM was planning on being out of town this week. The above scene–a lush green lawn opening on the lapping Chesapeake Bay–was to greet GM each morning. But sadly a terrible snafu with Airbnb means he’s stuck in DC instead. Read on if you’re looking for a cautionary tale.
GM made his reservation for the house in May, anticipating that with the city pool’s closed, a mid July break would be needed. While GM first found the house on VRBO, he also found it on Airbnb. Call Your Mother Issued C of O
The last formal regulatory obstacle to Call Your Mother opening was crossed Tuesday when the restaurant received a Certificate of Occupancy for their Georgetown location. They are now permitted to open asap, although they have not yet announced when exactly they will open.
Some immediate neighbors will no doubt bemoan the restaurant opening (although nobody should give them grief if they nonetheless partake; if they are to bear to cost of living next door, who could begrudge them from enjoying the benefit?) But many more will cheer their long-delayed arrival. Things are grim around Georgetown these days. A perfect bagel from a day-glo storefront should help out a smidge.
