An Intern’s Guide to Georgetown
It’s that time again, and GM will today provide (and slightly update) his annual Intern’s Guide to Georgetown:
As year-round Washingtonians know, it’s that time of year again. Eager young interns will soon arrive in earnest droves to fill those couple inches on their resumes between their GPAs and their “other interests”. Many of these interns will be drawn to live and/or play in Georgetown. GM publishes the below crash course for interns each year:
To Live:
There’s a movement to pay interns more, in order to allow a wider swath of the population to participate in career enhancing experiences. But that said, if you’re an intern you’re still probably living on little to no pay. Can you afford to live in Georgetown? Maybe. But you’ll have to look hard. You’re young, so you probably can’t even remember a time before Craigslist, so no need mention that. But there are other places to look too. The City Paper still has decent listings, but for the short term rentals that you’re probably looking for you may try off campus housing listings like you’ll find here. GM has also heard good things about Facebook Marketplace. Good luck.
To Eat:
The Safeway should be on your weekly checklist. You can load up on groceries without going totally broke. For some variety, go to the Whole Foods up in Glover Park sometimes (the Whole Foods is indefinitely closed), or the Trader Joe’s in the West End. Or you could sign up for Car2Go and head out to Costco at Pentagon City to really make your dollar go far.
Restaurants in Georgetown get a bad wrap. But there are plenty of relatively cheap options for a weekly night out. Here are some of GM’s old reliable options:
- Mexican – Los Cuates
- Falafel – Falafel, Inc.
- Pizza – Pizzeria Paradiso
- Spanish – Bodega
- Korean – Zannchi
When your parents come to visit and are paying the bill, make a reservation at Chez Billy Sud or, if you’re a traditionalist, 1789.

- No emergency, the District flag was just accidentally flown upside-down at the library.
- The Graham hotel roof has one of the best views in the neighborhood. Here’s a chance to enjoy it with some wine.

More Bikeshare Stations on the Way

Two new Capital Bikeshare stations are on the way to Georgetown. This was confirmed at the ANC meeting Monday night. While it is unclear how soon they will be install, locations are set.
The first is in the eastern edge of Rose Park. Specifically the southeastern corner of P St. and Rock Creek Parkway:
The cooperation of the National Park Service is still needed before the station will be installed, but it is not expected to be an insurmountable barrier. Continue reading

ANC Commissioner Backs Kennedy for Ward Two
Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans has drawn a contender for the Democratic nomination next year. Foggy Bottom commissioner Patrick Kennedy has announced his challenge. And today, GM is posting Kennedy’s first big Georgetown endorsement, namely that of ANC Commissioner Joe Gibbons. He writes:
We Need Patrick Kennedy is the Ward 2 Councilmember We Need
As the former Chair of ANC2E and a Commissioner now in my second term, I am supporting Patrick Kennedy to be the next Ward 2 Councilmember.
I’ve voted for Councilmember Jack Evans in the past, and I’ve worked with him at our ANC; I respect his contributions to the community. Some may ask why, then, I would support another candidate, particularly so far out from the election.
The reason is simple: I know that I am for Patrick, and I don’t need to be against anyone else.
I first got to know him when I was reaching out to neighboring ANCs as a new Commissioner and ANC2E Chair back in 2017. Patrick was then, at the ripe old age of 25, a steady hand at the helm of the Foggy Bottom ANC (as he had been for several years).
I immediately sensed in him someone with a true sense of what public service meant. He was passionate, extraordinarily well-informed, even-keeled, and cared deeply about delivering tangible quality of life improvements for our communities.
Whether the topic was residential quality of life concerns, school issues, working with businesses, or thinking through transportation solutions…I found Patrick to be a collaborative, thoughtful partner across neighborhood boundaries and someone with a positive vision for the ward.
I also watched how he dealt with difficult issues and mediated solutions when competing interests were at stake; he is a person who pours his heart into doing the right thing, but I have never once seen him be anything less than completely respectful to someone with a different viewpoint. He is genuinely a well-meaning public servant, and a pleasure to work with.
I know that with Patrick, we will have a councilmember who understands the nuances and unique concerns of Georgetown and other neighborhoods in Ward 2. He always wanted to know more about the issues facing Burleith, Georgetown and Hillandale, and has worked with me and my colleagues numerous times over the years to make sure that our ANCs acted in harmony on issues of common interest.
Patrick’s style of leadership (transparent, thoughtful, honest, and a good listener who engages with everyone) is exactly what our ward needs right now. It’s time for a new generation of leadership to step up, and I can’t think of a better representative of the new generation than Patrick. I hope that you’ll join me in supporting him.
You can learn more about Patrick and get involved with his campaign at PatrickForWard2.com.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
The ANC voted again in support of the bus shelter on 35th St. last night. Correction: the ANC did not vote on the shelter last night. It merely allowed public comment, which was largely positive. It will be considered by the Old Georgetown Board on Thursday.- Anyone try out the new Burmese salad bowl place?
