Are there too many coffee shops in Georgetown? We may soon find out. Signage for the latest addition to the java scene appeared recently. The shop, Bluestone Lane, will take over half the space that Frye Company occupied at 1066 Wisconsin Ave.

GM actually first reported this addition last April. It was unclear at the time whether the shop would displace Frye Company or perhaps move in upstairs. Now it’s clear that it is only partially displacing Frye. Continue reading →

• A bunch of much needed bike parking was just added.
• There will be BBQ on the menu at America Eats Tavern.

Well that was fast. Just Monday we found out that Old Glory was closed. GM (and many others) speculated that a boring bank or women’s fashion chain would move into the space. But those fears were misplaced! In fact a restaurant would be taking over the spot. And the restaurant in question is Jose Andres’s America Eats Tavern. Continue reading →

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• A look inside Kevin Plank’s house for sale (GM think’s it’s a bit tacky, to be honest)
• There’s got to be something more to this: An assailant tries to use a brick to steal a couple bikes.

As mentioned in the morning link post, Old Glory has closed suddenly. This is real loss for the community and it continues a very alarming trend for Georgetown: restaurants just can’t keep open on M St.

GM has documented this trend for a while. As early as 2014 (and really before) there has been a steady decline in restaurants on M St. Just last month GM was noting that with the closure of Unum, Pier 2934, and Maxime, restaurants along M St. were down to 23. With Old Glory that brings it down to 22. When GM started counting back in 2008 the number was 45. Continue reading →

This week on Seven Georgetowns, GM is going to discuss the northern tip of Georgetown, which he uncreatively has dubbed: Upper Georgetown.

It probably makes sense to first describe the official northern boundaries of Georgetown itself, to help explain Upper Georgetown’s boundary. Georgetown is the only neighborhood in DC that is actually defined by federal law. (The definition is necessary to describe where exactly the Old Georgetown Act applies). The northern boundary of Georgetown, according to that definition, runs east along Reservoir Rd. from just west of the hospital. Then it heads north down the center of 35th St. to Whitehaven Parkway. From there it runs east of Wisconsin and meanders through the woods until it hits Rock Creek.

Upper Georgetown’s southern border is Book Hill, which comes to a natural northern end at the library. The eastern border is a bit fuzzier. GM figures that at some point between 32nd and Wisconsin, R St. and S St. stop being Georgetown Heights and start being Upper Georgetown, but it’s not a bright line. Continue reading →
