GM has heard that a Wawa is coming to Georgetown.

Specifically, GM hears that the Wawa is coming to the space currently occupied by the Restoration Hardware at the corner of Prospect and Wisconsin.

If you’re from a particular part of the mid Atlantic, Wawa holds a dear place in your heart, for some reason. For the rest of us, it’s a slightly nicer version of a 7-11.

Although it should be pointed out that this Wawa appears to be part of an effort by the chain to create “restaurant-style” stores that look less like they should be next to four rows of gas pumps.

Whatever. Call it a restaurant all you want, it’s still just a gas station convenience store that happens to make decent sandwiches. Continue reading →

GM has already given you his annual harangue about watering your street trees back in May. But then it rained a lot. And you may have gotten complacent about trees on your block. But the rain has let up and it’s going to be hot this week so IT’S GO TIME.

If you’ve got a newish tree on your block water it today. If you’re at home or when you get home, go out and put a hose at the base of the tree and turn it on to a dribble of water, then leave it there for at least 30 minutes, up to an hour. If you don’t have a hose on the front of your house or apartment, find a neighbor who does and ask them if it’s ok to borrow their hose. Continue reading →

Dumbarton Oaks

The Georgetowner newspaper published an interesting article this week on the rise of young families in Georgetown. One facet the article touches on, but doesn’t really dive into, is the question of just how many kids there are, and how has it changed recently.

The Census Bureau can put some more meat on the bones. GM looked at the population numbers for Georgetown for 2000, 2010 and 2015. (In this case, Georgetown is Census Tracts 1.00 and 2.02, which is Georgetown minus the Georgetown University campus). Continue reading →
