• Where GU kids get booze. GM’s not particularly surprised to see Wagner’s listed as the place where it’s “easy to use fake ID”.

Montrose Park

Smart Growth America released a moving report this week cataloging all the pedestrians deaths in America over the last ten years. The total number is a staggering 47,205. The thrust of the report is that these deaths are largely the result of roads designed to move cars without regard to pedestrian safety.

The group performed an added service by mapping every death here. This allows you to see exactly where in your city or town people have been killed. And by zooming in on Georgetown, we can see that four people have been killed by drivers over the past ten years. That’s one every 30 months.

The sad vagaries of each case demonstrate that no single cause can be blamed. Most of us remember the sad death of Joe Pozell, the reserve officer (and Oak Hill Cemetery caretaker) who was killed while directing traffic at M and Wisconsin in 2005. Some may also remember the ten year old boy killed at 33rd and Wisconsin while he ran across the street in 2010. Also among the dead was a man killed by a hit and run driver on the Key Bridge in 2011, and another man killed at M and Wisconsin in 2010. Continue reading →

Dumbarton Oaks

In December, GM promised that the Eastbanc condos being built on the site of the former Verizon building parking lot would go on sale “soon”. Well soon has come: the seven redonkulously chic condos are now yours for the taking.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• Richard Sandoval would start a Peruvian restaurant in Georgetown. Note that “would” is not the same as “will”. Interestingly, Georgetown used to have a Peruvian restaurant with Machu Pichu.
• Monica Lewinsky, Nathan’s and Carol Joynt’s son.

Dumbarton Oaks

The Concerts in the Park returned Sunday for the 2014 season, and might’ve been the largest crowd yet.

Perennial performer Rebecca McCabe performed again this year, with the backing of the very cool local group, the Human Country Jukebox. The crowd (ok, mostly just the kids) were up and dancing throughout the show. The rest of the crowd, which GM will roughly estimate at a couple hundred, took in the show with picnics, supplemented with a free ice cone, or two.

Of course it didn’t take a bunch of frozen high fructose corn syrup to get the kids going absolutely nuts (ok, mostly just the girls) over McCabe’s sing-along version of the hit Disney song “Let it Go”. GM’s got a daughter himself, but has luckily avoided this song, which apparently has an effect on children roughly equivalent to crack cocaine. So many kids loaded the stage to belt out the tune that GM was genuinely concerned that the stage might collapse. Happily the only bad thing that happened was that GM got the song stuck in his head all day. Continue reading →
