The Multi-Outfitted Skeleton of Volta Place Returns Again

Every year at this time, GM’s neighbors, Marnie and Dennis Kenney, post a skeleton on their stoop (above is a photo from a few years ago). And every day he or she (the skeleton is of indeterminate sex) gets a new, often increasingly creepy, outfit. Last night it was wearing a bridal veil, which is about the creepiest look a skeleton can have.

Here’s some more photo’s of Mr. or Mrs. Skeleton from years past. GM hopes the borderline disturbing ballerina makes a reappearance this year!

Here he is exploring his French impressionist side:

Here she is baking up a fine souffle:

Bookstore Project Takes a Few Steps Forward

Old Georgetown Theater, Soon to Be Empty, Still For Sale

GM wrote a few weeks back about the community effort to bring a Politics and Prose branch to Georgetown. Nothing truly subtanstive has been announced, but the project took one small step forward last week when it set up a website.

The site is bare-bones right now, only containing a form to subscribe for email updates. But right now, it’s critical to get as many interested people roped-in and ready to be called upon when the time comes. Continue reading

Why Not: Rename Rose Park Herring Hill Park?

A long time ago GM ran an occasional series called “Why Not?” in which he’d make some wild eyed proposal for Georgetown (e.g. “Why Not Build a Ferry to Roosevelt Island?“, or the prescient “Why Not Build a Waterfront Ice Rink?“). Herring Hill is the name given to the historically African-American community that was centered south of P St. and east of 29th St. Legend has it that the name came from the practice of the community members to eat herring out of Rock Creek.

In other words: Rose Park is Herring Hill. Continue reading

How Georgetown Could Be More Bikeable

New O and P Streets Great for Bikers

Right now, DDOT is conducting a long term study on how people move around DC, and how they will move around DC in the future. The study is appropriately named MoveDC.

Part of the study’s process is analyzing bike use and what can be done to encourage it more in the future. In preparation for some upcoming public input meetings, a draft of some options has been circulated. The DC Bicycle Advisory Council obtained a copy of the plans. Check them out here.

DDOT considers several different “scenarios”: Stay the course (i.e. just continue the current plans), Get to the Center (build more infrastructure designed around moving more people downtown), and Connect the Neighborhoods (i.e., build a stronger interneighborhood links).

The choice of the scenario has impacts on what would get built and what wouldn’t. Here’s they would possibly improve Georgetown: Continue reading
