Politics and Prose Branch Contemplated For Georgetown

Old Georgetown Theater, Soon to Be Empty, Still For Sale

As reported by Carol Joynt, there is a group of Georgetown residents leading an effort to bring a bookstore/community gathering place to Georgetown, and the iconic Politics and Prose is interested in being part of it.

Joynt writes:

Politics & Prose, the popular Cleveland Park bookstore that has made a name for itself with often news-making “author talks,” is considering opening its first branch store in Georgetown. “We were approached recently by a group who are very interested in having us open a branch in Georgetown. We’re definitely interested,” Bradley Graham confirmed to Washingtonian…The location under consideration, Graham says, is the old Georgetown Theater building.

GM has been aware of this effort for a while, and it really seems like it has a chance. But plenty of challenges remain. The theater has been on the market for years, with an originally quoted price of $4.9 million. The cost to rehab the building will also be fairly steep. And that’s where you may come in. Bit of the Eastern Shore Coming to Georgetown

IMG_2467[1]

Recently, Tugooh Toys moved its shop from 1319 Wisconsin up to 1355 Wisconsin Ave. because their lease ran out and a new lease would be too expensive. A sign has gone up in the old space announcing the future tenant: American/Holiday, a homegoods store from St. Michael’s on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

There’s not a lot of information publicly available about the store other than its Facebook page. A Yelp page on the St. Michael’s shop offers this bit of information:

This place just opened a few months ago, and I am so glad it did! The shop is chic, tasteful, and AFFORDABLE, with a great variety of home goods, gifts, and a small selection of women’s clothing. The St. Michael’s location is the flagship for the owners (who are from Washington, D.C.), being just ahead of a new Georgetown spot opening soon. American Holiday is a must see! Continue reading

Bayou Documentary on WETA Tonight

As mentioned here several times, a labor of love by local film maker Dave Lilling has produced a documentary on the late great Bayou night club that once graced Georgetown’s K St. (Watch the trailer above). This afternoon, the full documentary will be broadcast on WETA today at 4:00 pm.

It is especially fitting to reminisce on the Bayou just days after Gypsy Sally’s–which seems to capture some of the same spirit as the Bayou–opened just down the street.

So check it out!

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • People had snarky things to say about TJ Maxx.
  • Random thought: Wouldn’t Ted’s Bulletin be a great place to move into the old Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory? Their second outpost on 14th st. is pretty swanky.

Gypsy Sally’s Born With a Song

20130913-085221.jpg

Last night Georgetown’s newest music venue debuted. Gypsy Sally’s is the labor of love of husband and wife David and Karen Ensor. And it is fantastic.

Arriving to a rustic wooden door next to the far-from-rustic Malmaison, concertgoers head up two flights of steps and arrive at a surprisingly large and open music hall.

The space has two bars, a couple dozen tables, a couple more dozen stools, and a dance floor. As if that were not impressive enough, there’s a whole separate back-room bar called the Vinyl Lounge, where only vinyl records will provide the tunes.
