Now and a Long Time Ago: Reservoir and Wisconsin

This week on Now and a Long Time Ago, GM heads up to Book Hill. Nowadays, Book Hill is a beautiful little hillside park that offers an even more beautiful view from the top. It is named, of course, after the stately public library that crowns it.

At the base of Book Hill is Reservoir Rd. GM long assumed that Reservoir Rd. was named after the reservoir at its western end: the Georgetown reservoir in the Palisades. But there was another reservoir at the eastern end: the Wisconsin Ave. Reservoir. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Gypsy Sally’s set to open in September.
  • Looks like a Vietnam restaurant is, or shortly will, open in the old Book Hill Bistro spot.

GM came across this scene yesterday on 34th, just south of M. For those familiar with finer 1960s films, they might recognize the plot point an object like this played:

While we probably haven’t made up all that loss, recently we’ve made up a lot of it and will gain even more soon.

This year has seen a bunch of new restaurants open here. Here are the ones GM could think of in no particular order:

  • Capitol Prague (and cafe)
  • Malmaison
  • Rye Bar
  • the Grill Room (both of these are in the new Capella hotel)
  • Good Stuff Eatery
  • Noodles and Co.
  • Kintaro (in the old J. Chocolatier space) Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Seems like GU would be better off switching from bulldogs to golden retrievers.
  • As someone who hosted his rehearsal dinner at Hook, GM is particularly sad to see the wheels come off at chez Umbel. But how in the world were they surprised that Mike Isabella want to severe all ties? It’s been pretty obvious for months.

O and P to Get Swept

New O and P Streets Great for Bikers

In a lot of DC neighborhoods, from March to October residents with cars are obliged to weekly move their cars to accommodate street sweeping. For whatever reason, Georgetown is exempt from this burden (GM has heard it was due to the narrow streets where parking is only on one side, but who knows if that’s true). Yet the streets don’t seem so bad, do they? Continue reading
