Now and a Long Time Ago: M and 35th

This week on Now and a Long Time Ago, GM stops by the old Car Barn on M St.

Above you can see what it looks like today, and what it looked like in 1894 when the crews were carving a huge chunk out of the cliff in order to fit in the giant streetcar station.

As GM has written before, the station, called Union Station, was originally built for cable cars, which is what the Washington and Georgetown railroad used for the first two years of the station’s operations.

The building continued to be used by various streetcar companies until the system was dismantled in 1962. It passed through several hands before ending up owned by Douglas Jemal. He rents it to Georgetown University for use as classroom and event space.

The Georgetown Household

The Georgetown Household

GM was looking for something to write about last night, and he realized that when he was going through the most recent American Community Survey results from the Census last January, he forgot to focus on Georgetown household stats. So let’s remedy that!

There are 4,827 households in Georgetown (this excludes GU). Of those, 4,147 are occupied and 680 are vacant. They contain 10,315 people, so the average household holds 2.49 residents.

Over 65% of the housing structures were built before 1939. Unfortunately that’s the earliest category for this data, so it doesn’t say how many homes are 18th or 19th century structures. The next largest percentage of housing age is for the 1980s, when 11% of Georgetown housing structures were built. Continue reading

New Day Care Center Opening in Georgetown

GM likes to say that anyone who believes in the power of supply and demand has never tried to find day care in DC. It’s pretty brutal. GM put his name on the list of three centers seven month before his daughter was even born. And despite having “priority” at two of those centers, he didn’t get off the waitlist until his daughter was nine months old.

But it’s about to get (slightly) easier to find day care in Georgetown. Bright Horizons is opening a new day care center in Georgetown this fall. It will be located at 1010 Wisconsin Ave. (just above K St.). Continue reading

Old Georgetown in Color: the Great Flood

flood color

This week in Old Georgetown in Color, GM returns to another old photo he’s shown before. It’s a photo of the Potomac waterfront after a flood. The photo at the Library of Congress merely says “Potomac flood, Georgetown, D.C.” [created between 1909 and 1923].

GM thinks, however, that this flood was from Feb. 1918. Check out this excerpt from a Washington Post article from 2/19/1918: Continue reading
